Hi

After recommendations from this site I have been talking to Leisuretech in clitheroe regarding an automatic satellite dish for our Kontiki.

I am looking at either a Teleco Easy Automatic Dish 85cm at £1799 installed with a Free to air box or a CAMOS SAT-DOME: STATIC
40cm at £1399. I think I can negotiate a discount as well on both hopefully.

I want the range as we may travel all over Europe but I also want reliability. I understand that the 85cm dish should give good coverage but can be affected by wind but that the dome is less likely to be affected by wind but has less range.

Has anyone purchased these products and what do you think? Or are there similar or better products on the market.

I dont mind (well yeah I do actually) spending up to £2000 if its going work. I do not want to spend this kind of money only to find I have temperamental tele!!!

We also freecamp loads so I dont want to use much power.

Any help always appreciated

Regards
BarryD

Are there any TV programmes that are worth paying £2k to watch?

Barry,

Yes, there is plenty already on MHF about the Camos Dome from its users. There is an explicit review from me posted over well over 3 years ago.

The Oyster is similar. Not many people go the Teleco route.

I enjoy my TV and our Camos (40 cm?) Dome has incredible reception via my Sky box throughout most of "Western Europe" and all of the UK

Money well spent.

We even had it easily transferred when we changed campers.

A number of fellow motor homers who checked it out in the S of France fitted one on return to the UK.

Great piece of kit
 Dome or Dish???

Hmm thanks so far

I like the idea of the dome. Dave I cant find your review, is there a link?

If you go out of Astra2 range which I beleive is the english channels can you pick up the other satellites then? so like say I was in Turkey would I be able to pick up the rubbish you get when your on hols in Mamaris?

Is the Dome more reliable and resistent to wind and weather?

Presumably its easier to move from van to van by the sound of it.

regards
Barry

Where did you look? Just drill down from MHF home page - Reviews, Motorhome Product Reviews, Satellite Systems, Camos 40cm satellite system.

That is, here:
http://www.motorhomefacts.com/modules.php?name=Product_Reviews&op=show&rid=67

I told a lie - review is under 3 years old but I had had the Camos about a year at the time.

Hi

I had an Oyster 85cm on my previous van - no problems with the equipment. I could receive BBC and ITV channels at Lake Garda in Italy. The dish had to be lowered in windy weather though, so no TV.

I now have a Camos 40cm static. It does not get BBC and ITV at Garda, but does get radio and also SKY channels, and also Channel 5. Despite the recent gales, I watched TV uninteruppted.

Thanks again Dave

So the fact that the Dome is much smaller than a traditional 65 or 85cm dish doesnt necessarliy mean it will be out peformed as it is more accurate prescise (is that correct?).

We like wild and wooly places so the wind factor is a worry with a raised dish and if I fall asleep and forget about it half way up an Alp it could be blown off and half the roof with it by morning. Whereas with a dome you dont have this worry I assume.

They are also cheaper than the 65 or 85cm dish on LeisureTechs site at £1399 for a 40cm (Installed). http://www.leisuretechservices.co.uk/satellites.htm
but they dont seem to come with a Free to View box like the others

I think I am leaning towards the doam but will keep reading.

Thanks
Barry

Hi barryd, i have the KVH Trackvision in motion and its a great bit of kit, i think the consensus is that there isn't much in it between the dome systems! i bought mine through a recommendation, and it works a treat everywhere, the only thing to watch out for is trees.

Well a small dome in a Camos will not outperform an 85cm dish. As I think I said in the review, there is no substitute for capture area at the edge of a satellite footprint. But yes, a precise dish/LNB combination can outperform one somewhat larger.

Don't forget that with digital, you don't get a better picture with better signal to noise ratio above a certain point. So as long as your dish is big enough for where you are, that is, um, big enough! Smile
