I've recently purchased one of these cheap portable satellite systems that comes with the Comag SL30/12 receiver and a 35cm dish. I appreciate the dish may struggle to get a signal as I travel down through France but should be adequate in the UK and Northern France. I have read elsewhere that I can always buy a larger dish in France if I need to.
With the Comag receiver I can receive the free to air channels via Astra, but my question is, can I pick up the Freesat channels with this receiver? Or is Freesat just a generic name for free channels from Astra? ie are the Freesat channels the same ones that can be picked up free to air on a Sky box or any other free to air receiver, or do Freesat have any exclusive channels?
Also, would this receiver pick up channels from other satellites? (We like to tune into French channels to improve our French language skills).
There are others more knowledgeable than I on here but for now:-
The reciever will pick up the same channels as Freesat but you won't get the EPG only the what's on now and next. The channels are all output on Astra 2D but the EPG is only released to Sky or Freesat users so if you want that you will need a Freesat receiver.
Your dish will work right down to the Spanish boarder area on Astra 1 Then you can switch to Astra 2 and get the French and German channels and a few English news channels.
We have used a standard Sky dish just north of Barcelona and viewed BBC and ITV channels you have to check all the regional broadcasts as some are stronger signals than others.
Dont bother spending out on a freesat box. Unless you have a large 1080line TV (which i doubt) in your MH there is not much to be gained. You will pick up Astra 2 in France then Astra 1, Hotbird, Hispassat etc in Spain. You will lose BBC ITV at the bottom of france but still get Sky news, Euronews,MTV germany etc on the small dish throughout Spain. Best bet is buy a bigger dish locally if you want more (Carrefour,Bricolages, sometimes Lidl) but you will not get BBC/ITV between Peniscola and Cabo de Gata .IE the costas. The sun often shines here so we dont normally sit in watching much TV. Alternative is to use a sky box with card tune to the southern beam and you can then watch Sky sports almost throughout Spain but I dont bother with this myself as the F1 and football is all to be seen on spanish Analoge TV
I've recently bought a Freesat box as my Pace box packed in. Two comments that I think are relevant here.
1. You can buy the Freesat boxes quite cheaply now that Humax have brought out the PVR version. I paid £99 earlier in Sept and decided to buy another for home and got it for £49.99. Humax is 240 volt and Grundig is 12 volt
2. The best part for me is you get a better selection of channels on Freesat, including the France24 news channel, great when in France, the Euro channel, Russian News etc. all in English in addition to the normal BBC & ITV channels with at least 6 film channels. If you have HD TV you also get the BBC and ITV HD broadcasts (not so good in MH's unless you have a 42 inch set)
I know how good the small silvercrest box is. I dont know what box is with the ebay system. If I were you I would go to Maplin by the small in a box camping set then congratulate yourself on having bought the right thing. I think its about 75pounds It can always be improved by using a manual crank up from Snelly or a tripod mounted bigger dish from many outlets here in Spain but most of the time it will work brilliantly and certainly in the UK no problem. I have just taught a man how to set it up at La Marina in Spain and he managed to get it first time with a picture on screen instantly. Its only a knack but dont worry if you buy one we will not let you struggle we will help
The one I bought was from Makro for £57.50 and includes the Comag SL30/12 receiver which runs on 240v mains or 12V DC.
Regarding Freesat, that was part of my original question - The best part for me is you get a better selection of channels on Freesat, including the France24 news channel, great when in France, the Euro channel, Russian News etc. all in English in addition to the normal BBC & ITV channels with at least 6 film channels. Can I get all this with my free to air receiver?

My maplin suitcase system gets most of the free chnnels that you get on a sky reciever. i updated my box just before christmas and this gets you all the latest channels like film 4. more 4 etc.
Its currently on offer at Maplins for 59.99.
I also have a multimo dish which although only 45 cm dia has a preamp which makes it as good as a 60cm dish.
you can also get astra 1, hotbird, turksat, hippo, etc etc on the same reciever.
Hope this help
