I woulod recommend the Silvicamp toaster. It is an American design and looks like a rectangular box it takes two pieces and toasts really fast-I mean really fast. It usually is available at the shows and was imported by a firm in Ireland. But now a German company does it you can buy it direct for about £10. I have used all sorts of toasters and this is the best.

When I was at Ganges circa 1961 we used to make toast using the iron.
Brill toast although a bit thin and your clothes seemed to always be covered in crumbs. . Not sure what happens with steam irons though.
