As Trevor said, and for those that don't know (me until Snelly told me) there is a satellite meter built into the Sky box, select Services on the remote control then 46.
Charlie
Yes Charlie, but that is a visual meter, and the Pace Sky boxes have a second or two delay, between locating the satellite and it showing up on the on screen meter, by which time you have passed the location.
I installed an audio meter, and left it in all the time, without any problems, although, it is now redundant along with the Sky box.
Jock.

....and no I've never used a meter - so does that somehow discredit my thoughts on the process ????

I think it probably does Harry.
Up to a point anyway. They are such a "blunt instrument" they can be more of a hindrance than a help.
Anyway - I was going to say to both you and Wilse, don't be put off a Crankup. They are cracking bits of kit and very well made.
Once you have a bit of experience, and have the decoder box set up correctly (possibly Wilse's problem) you will be able to get a lock in about a minute. It rarely takes me longer than that, and I'm sometimes having a cup of tea while the auto-seeking systems are still nodding and pirouetting!!
The other problem Wilse may be having is the slow response of some decoders. By the time it registers a signal you have gone past it and don't even realise it was there.
I've got a Dreambox and they are lightning quick. They also have a very sensitive digital and analogue on-screen meter which makes finding a signal a piece of cake.
Hope this helps
Dave
Can someone explain the Dreambox to me. Just had a look at the website and it says cardsharing - we have a Sky box with Sky Sports - can we just transfer the card when we are using the motorhome without having to contact Sky before or after the transfer?
. . . . we have a Sky box with Sky Sports - can we just transfer the card when we are using the motorhome without having to contact Sky before or after the transfer?
Yep. Exactly that.
There was some debate as to whether it is strictly legal, and there have been two (I think) test cases, both of which Sky lost, so no problems there.
Since the Dreambox reads from your Sky card only what you have subscribed to, I can live easily with my conscience.
If part of the family stayed at home while others were away, and Sky was being watched in two places at once I could understand an objection - and it probably would be illegal (theft of service?).
When nobody is left at home however, the Sky package is simply being watched in another place.
Dreamboxes are not cheap, but they are lightning fast at decoding the signal so finding the satellite is a doddle. They are also very small (the size of a cigar box) and sooooo convenient if you want Sky in the van.
Have a look on Snelly's website >> here << He's as cheap as anybody and one of the best dealers I have ever bought from. (No connection.)
Thought I'd update on this thread, as my problems seemed cured but I've had whilst being away.
I struggled to get anything on a few occasions, looking back was probably to do with trees etc.
Whilst away I did a reset on the sat box, and retuned, lots of channels came up, but all the crud I'm not bothered in,... the islam channel... and essex babes!
I have managed now, to lose all BBC channels, C4 (but C4+1 is ok??)
Can't get dave, five, fiver, film 4 only occasionally.
I noticed on the set-up it there seems to be a few choice of scans... including TP scan... and auto scan? are they not the same thing?
I installed a Maxview crankup system on my motorhome last year - which we've been very impressed with so far.
One question, all the pictures on the web show the dish without the oval piece of black foam rubber in the centre (which the LNB arm folds up against when wound down).
Is this something I should have removed at installation - can it affect picture quality when the dish is up ?
When i had a crank up manual satellite dish i invested in a Alden satellite finder SSC. What makes this different is that you tap in the satellite you want ie, astra north and start rotating your dish at approx the right elevation. When you get the right satellite it bleeps and illuminates an led, it IGNORES ALL other satellites, makes set up a doddle. No wrong signals, no wrong satellites, if it cant see the satellite it wont bleep.
Not cheap £300 ish but an absolute fantastic piece of kit that made life so easy. Its original use is to control motorised dishes.
I'm totally ham fisted at everything I try. The first time I used the crankup it took me about an hour to get a picture and that turned out to be Astra 1. After a bit of practice I now get a picture within a minute, normally quicker than the auto jobbies. If I can do it anyone can.
When abroad I use a free to air box with a built in satellite finder (cost £40 from Maplin) linked to a Sky Box. In the UK I leave my free to air box behind and use a satellite finder at a cost of about £5 from ebay.
