Hi, I've recently fitted a crank up satalite dish for the roof of my Hymer 544, it looks great! but not 100% sure how to use it or which would be the best satalite to use. Can someone please help me.

Thanks Stuart

Hi Stuart,

If you are after the "SKY TV" type channels I would be aiming at the Astra 2 satellite at 28.2 degrees east.

Good Luck

Stuart,

You need a satellite receiver for the dish to connect to. Read:

Astra 28.2 est . for the uk almost horizontal ! If you subscribe to sky you need a sky box , if not free to air /BBC/ITV -4-5 film4 ect and 250 channels with any sat receiver , the Astra sats are owned by the old radio luxemberg group, sky just rent their transponders, check out some tech info on how to find and set your dish and lnb up , any 10 quid sat meter will find your sat, if you have it set up correctly, in minutes!

If you want to know where to point your dish to pick up Astra 28.2 then try this site.

http://www.dishpointer.com/

If you put in your location it displays a google map with your location and a line showing you in what direction to aim the dish. You can select from a number of different satellites but you will see 28.2 there.

Underneath the map it will show the compass bearing to aim, the elevation angle ( bear in mind if you have an offset dish that the actual angle you want will be much lower ) and the skew angle which in this country may not be so important. Using these figures you ought to be able to set the Crankup pointing more or less straight at it.

If you need to adjust a little then move the dish very slowly from east to south until you get a signal, if you have a satfinder that's even better but you can use the signal bars on the Maplin receiver provided you can see them or hear the tone generator. Once you get a peak signal, lock the position and then try altering the elevation angle until you also get a peak signal. Hopefully you're then ready to go.

If you are having trouble it's either because you don't have a good line of sight to the satellite or your angle of elevation is too steep so try starting off with the dish almost straight up and down if you know what I mean, and then alter the angle a bit at a time. The satelite is very low on the horizon which was a bit of a surprise to me, I thought it was up in the sky. Laughing Laughing Shocked

Great little units the Maplin thingys, good luck and have fun. Very Happy Very Happy
