eg I have to put in the code for "use italics/ underline/ bold etc by hand and can't just click on the icon.)

that happens on a few forums - I can do the bold etc thing on MHF but not on another forum I use and I can't work out why!! I think it's something to do with javascript that runs behind the browsers.

as for the mail thing - don't use Mozilla (or any web browser) for mail. use a separate mail client like Outlook Express or Thunderbird (Mozilla's stand alone mail client). Thunderbird is very good

out of interest how much memory do you have? web browsers, especially with multiple pages/tabs open can eat memory which can lead to no response.

have you tried Google Chrome as a browser? it's very quick and good - that's my preferred option now. it's also free and based on the same code as FF.

or download FF 3.5beta - that's interesting and may solve some of your problems

Just read through this lengthy thread for the first time - passing interest only you understand.

No-one seems to have mentioned the obvious cure - GET A MAC.

Not entirely foolproof, but having used both Win and Mac, I only use a PC under duress now.

I'll get me coat!

It is Thunderbird that I have- I've called it Mozilla in the icon I made and did not realise it was Mozilla Thunderbird not the other way round)

I didn't realise that - and it does explain other things. I put some new memory on a few months ago - can't remember how much but it does work better !

I've not even heard of it but am about to have a look.

Many thanks indeed for your help. Lots to think about - and change.

As to getting a Mac- see above- not on your nelly ! I'm married to a Mac-obsessive but have watched several of his machines pack up when my faithful 9 year old laptop and desktop are still going strong. I'm also supervising computer aided exam candidates at the moment and have had my heart stop several times over the past weeks when their computers ( Mac) have died in the middle of an exam and lost unsaved work.

I'm coming into this discussion a little late and haven't read the whole thread but I've had and fixed the problem with Vista/Firefox on my system.

What would happen is that Firefox would work for a while and then hang. I couldn't even stop it in Task Manager. Switching to IE8 still wouldn't allow access to the Web, however Outlook would still run proving access to the Internet was still working.

For me it turned out to be AVG8 that was the problem. It installs a Linkscanner which checks to see if pages you may visit are deemed safe. As soon as I disabled this option the problem went away. You can either disable it or choose not to install the option.

Hello,
I had this problem until recently. I had used Firefox for years with no problems until Vista. I found that after Firefox 'hung' I could use
Chrome for a little while longer and IE for a bit longer still but with the same result in the end. I changed AVG for Avast with no change. I took off Zone Alarm and I am now cured.Very Happy

Thanks
Chris
