It appears that there is afoot some changes, Now wether they have since materialized or not I have no idea, and after what I have been reading (Not on Forum) I am certainly NOT going to stake my life on it.
From what I can gather up to October last year it WAS illegal to display anything OTHER than the EU flag and the country on the number plate, ie the circle of stars and then GB under them, Now I don't know cos according to the editorial I have linked to they are changing the law.
But please read it and judge for yourself.
Personally I think Grizzly has got it right and that is the safest way to go for now.

did you click onto my link ? what do you think ?
Hi, Yes I did and that is also correct, The only problem I had with that one was that it wasn't dated, I know originally that it was illegal and so I wondered if that was an old link or not.
One of the problems with the web is that some sites are years out of date so I have a tendency to look for the date it was published and rely on that.
About 3-4 months ago I was looking for something to do with my business and found a site that was telling me how to do it, after I ruined a two way radio I found another site who actually stated to ignore the OLD instructions as the wiring had now changed, I looked and the date on the original was 1996, the latest 2004.
I know that I am now having plates made with the Euro flag on with GB under it, after all lets face it, It doesn't really matter does it?

Thanks for the tax disc thoughts. As this is a list for the less experienced I think I should just say that they should make sure that their tax disc is still valid for when they return. What do you think?
Regarding the tax disc, I had always thought that using a vehicle in the EU abroad was a "reciprocal agreement" i.e uk lets "legal in their own country" vehicles in to uk on the agreement that we can take "legal in our country" vehicles into their countries.
The SORN document quite clearly states that it can not be used whilst the vehicle is abroad.
It would be nice to know the real law on this as I was planning to go abroad in July, just after taxing the camper for a year!

Thanks Oilslick,
That was my understanding of 'reciprocal agreements' as well.
The Direct Gov site says:
'In advance – SORN or vehicle tax due to expire while you’re abroad
You can make a SORN up to two calendar months in advance. The vehicle must remain in Great Britain. Complete a V890 ‘Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)’ together with a letter explaining why you’re applying so far in advance and post them to DVLA, Swansea SA99 1AR.
Alternatively, you can make a SORN online or by phone at the time it’s due or get someone to make a SORN for you while you’re abroad.'
On the basis of this I have to keep the tax disc as part of the list of things to remain legal whilst in Europe. Outside of the EU may be a different matter but lets not go into that one
