We are in Portugal and have been managing to get ASTRA 1 ...... but are sooooo tired of a little news being made to go such a long way...... with 'Incredible India' every 5 minutes.
UK TV via ASTRA 2 is weak and often unreliable.
Question....... If I buy a 12v PACE 1000 (and try somehow to get a SKY card) then will I be able to watch encrypted SKY channels on our 85cm Oyster.
Will this be more reliable?
How do I get a SKY card without having to buy a package / skybox / etc?
Hi Stan
I have a pace 1000 which I had to register at home, and use it on my travels with our oyster in the motorhome. However I tried always to get a second card, but failed miserably,so the only way Is to move it in and out and register at home .
If anybody does know of another way id love to know

If you are just wanting the Free to air channels it is easy to get a card and register it to your box (Whichever box you may have), You need to phone sky and ask for a "Free to Air" card you will be put through to a department, There is a charge for the card which is a one off payment, I cannot remember how much it is, I think it was about £20, When they send the card to you you will need to phone them to activate it, It will be activated to your home address or wherever you get the card sent to.
If you are asking about receiving the channels where you are at the moment the answer will be doubtful, the encrypted channels come off Astra 2, so whatever reception you get now for Astra 2 is what you will get with the encryption/
What you really need is a bigger dish that is what enhances the reception.
have a multiroom addition about £10 a month with extra box took this everywhere strictly speaking should have had it plugged in to telephone line took about a year before they bothered then just took other card away with me.
don't bother with tv now just dvd or laptop , unless rugby is going to be on.
So........ am I right in saying that I buy the Pace box........ phone SKY and ask for a "Free to Air Card" and pay a modest fee.......... and then I should / will be able to receive more reliable UK TV via the south beam ??
No, sorry! - most Free To Air channels are on Astra2D - you need bigger dish not different receiver or card. Getting Freesat from Sky will leave you in exactly same position as you'll be trying to watch the same BBC/ITV channels on Astra2D, but now you will of paid for a card and box! South beam consists of mainly sky subscription channels. You need a 1.5m dish minimum for 2D channels.
Reference: http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html - look at 'Beam', most freesat channels are on 2D, click 2D to show you the footprint... now you know the problem!

To approach it from a different angle....(sorry!!)........if I were to subscribe to a SKY encrypted package.... say..... Variety pack and Football....... will these be found on another beam (other than 2D).... and should I then be able to receive them with the 85cm Oyster in southern Europe ? And if so..... then am I right in assuming that I still won't be able to receive BBC, ITV, etc.... unless as SaddleTramp mentions, I can squeeze it through 'Free to Air' transmissions ??
