Hi, I have some photo's taken with a mobile phone that are, to say the least, not very good, I suppose we have all seen films where these are enhanced by some computer trickery, is this possible, and if so does anyone know of a suitable programme to do this.
many thanks

You can enhance pictures somewhat with a suitable PC program such as photoshop, like sharpening, contrast, brightness and even alter the colour, but enhancing any picture will also enhance the poor quailty. I'm afraid those magical enhancements one seen on the tellie - such as in CIS where they magically produce pin sharp enhancement of a shadowy reflection in a window are only that - magic ! A poor photo will always remain a poor photo.

I think quite a lot can be done with even a low resolution picture as long as you don't want it blown up too big, as Artona handiwork shows.
If you just want something to get a bit better result, Google Picassa is a reasonable start and is simple to use (and free to download).
If you are willing to put some considerable time into getting the best that can be got from your piccies there is the industry standard Photoshop but is is not cheap. A free alternative that is just as good, if not better, is Gimp. But both of these take some learning and then take time to get the job done.

Some mobile phones are capable of producing very good images. When you say its not very good it could be a number of reasons why. It also depends on what you're trying to do with the end results. View on a screen, TV or print.
Products like Photoshop are very good at manipulating images and making improvements but it depends largely on the source you have to work with. Camera shake - producing a seemingly blurred image - is a typical problem and there really isn't anything you can do with this; similarly for out of focus shots.
If the image just lacks in tonality and sharpness then improvements can be made.
As previously suggested, why not post the image here and let us see what can be done.

This reminded me, Ern & I were out for a walk once, I had the camera in my hand, and we got talking to a nice couple from Australia. They offered to take a photo of us. It was an absolutely bitterly cold day, and being from Oz they probably felt it more. It certainly looks like they were shivering...
