Why are these being put into downloads? They would be more use as straight forward html pages? Plus they would be easier for the search engines to index possibly bringing in more subscribers?

Karl...45 minutes before you wrote this, in the post above yours, I wrote what I hoped was a simple answer to the same question in response to pete4x4.

It was my decision to post in this format for the reasons that I detailed above. Had I imagined it would cause such conflict I'd have gone out and shot myself instead.

If you really can't do downloads then PM me your e-mail address and I will send you the html version. It won't have the diagrams etc -as I explained above- but it will have the words.

That's the point, why should these documents be for the exclusive use of this forum, surely everybody who writes an informative article would prefer it to be available to all, unless you have been paid to write it of course.

If I had written something really informative then I would like all to know that I had done it, why do we care if all in sundry take it and plagiarise it as long as the information is informing.

Use it as a means of attracting subscribers not to restrict its audience.

Pete…I hope you're not trying to wind me up but, giving you the benefit of the doubt, I'll explain again.

A little history: A couple of weeks ago I suggested that members write and publish a series of articles explaining basic motorhoming topics, mainly for the use of newbies. Since no-one else raced to volunteer to co-ordinate this I did so. I thought it would be a good idea to publish all these articles in one area of the website so that, for a limited period, interested parties could read them and make comments and suggest additions. These comments and suggested additions could be acted upon by the original author. It's called peer-reviewing.

At the end of a set period the article would be deemed to be as good as it gets and would be transferred to a more permanent area of the website to be decided by the powers that be on the site.
Once there they would be open to all, members, non-members and Uncle Tom Cobleigh and All.
This is true of the majority of the articles now.

Are you still with me ?

There are also several very good articles in a separate section of the website that require downloading. These were written some time ago. It seems silly to ignore them as they are all good stuff. I asked the authors if they would mind them being added to the project. I have not got the skill or time and do not at this stage consider it necessary, to re-format these 3 downloads so that they could be published as html documents in the same place as the others. I thought that most people would be able to cope with a link to these articles. I do not know why you can't download them as I imagine you are a subscriber ? They do not occupy much bandwidth, downloading in a flash.

When readers have finished commenting on these downloadable articles then they will be reformatted- and the diagrams and photographs will go with them – and they will appear with the rest of the FAQ articles and be indistinguishable from them.

ALL the articles will be open to ALL whatever their status. No-one has been paid to write them, we've all done it from a desire to help fellow-motorhomers and I made it clear from the beginning that the idea was that people could print them off and take them away to use as they wish. If they manage to attract new members as you suggest then my life will not have been in vain.

Meanwhile I really don't know what else I can say. I assure you there was nothing sinister in the implementation of this project and I did not realise that anyone would get so steamed up about it.

'Nuff said, right ?

Sorry Grizzly, I mis-interpreted your original reply, I read 'more permanent area' to mean the download area so I take back my last post.
I was not trying to wind you up honest just open a debate which clearly is un-necessary. Very Happy

Nice post Pete, and thanks for it. Very Happy

I nearly jumped in with a caustic comment last night, but I'm very glad I didn't now since all is well and I'm sure there will be no hard feelings from Grizzly. Very Happy Very Happy

It's thread developments like this which make MHF such a nice place to be. People do make mistakes of course, but on here they usually get sorted out amicably and without personal hostility. Wink Laughing

Thanks Pete...and sorry I jumped down your throat. I was feeling just a little bit more grizzly than usual last night.
