I have a sky plus box and old sky card which still picks many (but not all) of the free to air channels. Its about 5 years old so its way over the 12 months for contract agreements with sky. I used to use it on multiroom. I have now got a magic sat with twin lnb fitted in the motorhome. I have put the box on and the system works beautifully!

Now the problem I have is to get the card back on to sky subscription. I have read every post on here for ages and have tried the suggested ways of talking to sky. The basic problem I have is that I have to get them to agree that its not connected to the phone line.

As you can imagine they are like an old record and spout the same old verbage. I just have to find the right route. So far I have told them I have a motorhome, used only in the uk, they then ask is it static on site. to which I said yes when on site but I can move it from site to site. "Oh you can't have it then! You need very expensive equipment and an installer, and when he sees its a van he will say no". I told the stupid man that I have all the expensive equipment fitted, its installed and working I only need to pay the subscription. He still said no!!!

I suspect from what they say I have to tell them its a static caravan somehow and get a seperate contract from the one at home for which I am prepared to pay for the basic subscription cost of about £17 per month as by doing this it will all open up the recording bit of the sky plus box.

As I can't do it by telling the whole truth I wonder if anyone on here with a sky subscription and permanent box in the motorhome can tell me the language or theoretical situation I need to use to achieve my aim.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Many thaks in advance.

Joyce

A freind of mine uses a Pace Javelin/1000 series Sky receiver in both his motorcaravan and at home (transplants as required). He has always said that you should never mention to Sky the fact the box will be used in a mobile capacity, or else they may not allow subscription / pairing of the card to the receiver.

I don't know if this is Sky's official position, but I suspect they are not keen on mobile usage due to copyright issues if outside the UK, or potentially if they try to hunt you down for non payment of subscription or interactive services (need a permanent address).

Interestingly, I have also recently acquired a reconditioned Pace Javelin for use in my van (when the Camos is fitted), and my game plan is to use the multi room second box subscription for this purpose. I am in the process of trying to get the card paired with the box, and after 3 calls with different personnel at Sky, I am still awaiting full success (currently premium sport/film channels not accessible). I should know more circa 18:30 tonight....

As a general approach, I guess you should try and set up the Sky subscription / card pairing from a home adddress where possible, when the box is attached to the phone line - you won't appear "mobile" then. You can then disconnect and be mobile as required after that (subject to your contractual obligations of course Wink )

But I don't profess to be knowledgeable in this arena....

Hi Strod.
Thanks for you interesting reply.
Yes I had thought about resurrecting the multiroom by running a phone line temporarily to the motorhome but then it would tell me that it wasn't connected up and if sky don't get their feedback when they check then you can be liable for a full charge. However this is my back up plan if all other routes fail. As always its the phone line that presents a problem. I used to use this method on my old van of transferring the box from house to van but am trying to avoid that route as I worry about the illegality of it. I am prepared to pay a fee for a more limited choice of programmes while we are away and as an existing sky customer on a full package they have a permanent address for me.

I would be interested to hear how you get on as well. We can, it seems, all learn from each other.

hi popo,
we bought a non subscription sky box cheap of ebay and use that in the camper with the card from the house box which we have had for 10 years and the card works in both no probs, you could always try your card in the camper one or even try it in friends and do a swap.

I guess it also depends on your channel viewing requirements - if you don't need premium channels, Sky do their own "FreeSat" package which users can get for a one off payment of circa £20 for the card. Presumably exisiting cards can also be enabled for this service.

However, I'm not sure if you still have to pair the "FreeSat" card with the receiver in the same way as subscription services require, or if a telephone line would be required to do so. There can't be contractual requirement for a permanent telephone connection if you are a customer for over 12 months (assuming no change of contracted service), or if you purchase a used receiver.

Hi, You can use a Dreambox Sat Decoder 240v and use your card from your house and receive all the channels you subscribe to with no problem at all.

I have a pace 1000 and sky supplied me with a free to air card and activated it knowing it was for use in a Motorhome, I think I am correct in stating that they only require your location to enable the Menu you will get, ie Yorkshire Tv, Anglia Tv and so on.

I recently gave my son my dreambox unit and I did watch ALL my subscription package with no problems at all.

I picked up a digibox with a CI slot & got a dragon cam reader off ebay , i take my sky card from home & get all the channels i pay for including sky sports.

Some would say this is a bit naughty but why pay twice for the same thing. Smile Smile

Hi Rockerboots, Yes that certainly does work, The only thing you need to watch is that the Card will not do an auto update in a Dragon cam so if you are away for a period of time ie 6 - 8 weeks you "Could" lose your subscription channels, and you won't get them back until you get home again and the next update.

This is handy at the moment because the NEW Oyster's do already have a CI slot in.

The Dreambox which can be picked up for around 50 - 60 DOES automatically update.

We have Sky multiroom at home and bought the £20 card for the van -they know it is never going to be linked to a phone line and were happy with that, they only wanted to know so they can set e.g. BBC1 channel 101 to our local postcode (i.e. we have BBC SW as our "home" BBC1 on 101).

When we discussed taking one of the normal Sky cards we were told that every now and then they do a random check to ensure phone line still connected - not sure if that is true or "bovine manure" but we were warned if they could not detect card via line then card would be frozen.

Hence we have multiroom at home and Sky freesat in the van with a Pace box.

So, could I ask sky for my card to be changed to freesat (at a cost) perhaps even the pay once watch forever idea and use my home adress as a base as I am already a customer and the van would therefore get the channels I want but without the need for it to be "installed" by an engineer. That way I pay £19.50 a month but don't have it connected to a phone line within the legalities of their contract. As my motorhome is outside the house home address in this case scenario would still be legit.

Sorry if I sound thick but as I am deaf I don't use a phone so have to give all these instructions to my friend who phones for me.

As an afterthought my friend would also tell you that YES sky do check up if the phone line is linked. When wintereing down in Spain for many successive years her excuses wore thin with sky and she would receive threating letters to get it put on the phone line. She was quite inventive about how it had become "detatched" in her front room!

Regards

Joyce
