We have Sky multiroom at home and bought the £20 card for the van -they know it is never going to be linked to a phone line and were happy with that, they only wanted to know so they can set e.g. BBC1 channel 101 to our local postcode (i.e. we have BBC SW as our "home" BBC1 on 101).
When we discussed taking one of the normal Sky cards we were told that every now and then they do a random check to ensure phone line still connected - not sure if that is true or "bovine manure" but we were warned if they could not detect card via line then card would be frozen.
Hence we have multiroom at home and Sky freesat in the van with a Pace box.
So, could I ask sky for my card to be changed to freesat (at a cost) perhaps even the pay once watch forever idea and use my home adress as a base as I am already a customer and the van would therefore get the channels I want but without the need for it to be "installed" by an engineer. That way I pay £19.50 a month but don't have it connected to a phone line within the legalities of their contract. As my motorhome is outside the house home address in this case scenario would still be legit.
Sorry if I sound thick but as I am deaf I don't use a phone so have to give all these instructions to my friend who phones for me.
As an afterthought my friend would also tell you that YES sky do check up if the phone line is linked. When wintereing down in Spain for many successive years her excuses wore thin with sky and she would receive threating letters to get it put on the phone line. She was quite inventive about how it had become "detatched" in her front room!

Joyce
No You can phone sky and ask for a free to view card and it costs £20 one off payment and it does not need to be connected to a phone line at all.

So it seems you need to evaluate if the £20 one off payment Sky "FreeSat" card will suffice - regading the channels it provides versus the channels you may wish to watch when away...
Alternatively, you may have to be more "imaginative" regarding how you handle the sky subscription set up, sky card / digi box pairing, or use of alternative equipment (was it Dreambox ?) to suit your needs...
This is a very much talked about debate and there are many topics on this forum about it.
What you need to do is plan where you are going to need it as many of the subscription channels are not available all over Europe and you need to view the availability in areas or regions you will travel to.
What a Dreambox does is remove the need to actually have a Digibox from Sky, ie if you have a Digibox at home and it is connected to the phone you can leave it there and just use your card in the Dreambox Digibox and have the same Channels available as you would at home.
There is also an added bonus that if you are knowledgeable it is possible to get many more free channels on a Dreambox.
I have to be honest here, I used to have a Dreambox and take my Sky card with me, But I found that I was not actually using the TV so much so I gave my Dreambox to my son, I now have a Pace 1000 which I have had for a good few years sat doing nothing, and a Free to view card from Sky, I find this quite sufficient for what we want to watch.

hi there
please oh please be careful what you do with sky. i have had months of trouble with this company over the contract termination and now they are putting the screws on to get payment for the service of using the box away from source, no matter how many letters i write they don't read english or galic it has got to the stage of worry every time i see sky envelopes.
my advice for what it is worth is stick with free view which you can through the same box. good luck
norm again
if you have had sky for more than one complete year you don't have to connect to your phone line they like to let you think it is a condition but it isn't after 12 months the box is your property unless you had one of their specials which tied you in to contract for a specified period.
My navigator is deaf and suffers the same with the tv and sub titles but we have found that freeview can be programmed for subtitles and to boot there is a means to use the computer to view with subtitles but to date i am still researching the subject.
Just looking through the CC hand book and CC&Cs and they all state that were there is a signal they boost for good reception but were there is poor reception then no matter how many boosters you have or what power they will not help one bit, with mine we have one booster and a freeview box and a good arial both fixed and portable and we manage well.
All the best sorry to go on but keep away from sky
Where has FIVE gone? On my sky box I can't get Five or any of its derivatives since Thursday, just a message saying no satellite communication received, any ideas?
We have just bought a new Panasonic plasma TV. We have noticed that the quality of the regular non-satellite channels is marvellous
When we watch our Sky channels however, the quality in comparison is very poor. Is this normal, because when we watch non-HD channels on Freesat the quality is much better even though it is coming through the same dish
Am I right in thinking that quality of the signal and/or the performance of the box is at fault and is it typical of what Sky has to offer?
And is this why Sky HD has dropped in price
Happy wheels

A friend of mine has the basic sky subscription, it costs €30.50 which probably equates to the sub which is about £25 in the UK. He has a second box for his MH and just switches the card between the two. He says that the cards only seem to be paired with a box for the premium channels (movies, sports etc).
He has no phone line connected which he says is only required for multi room, which he doesn't have, to eliminate a group of people having a box each and cost saving by one of them doing a multi room contract.
Thanks to everyone who has commented on this thread. It has helped and made it clear to me that the route I was trying to take is impossible after all.
My decision, after much thought, has been to buy the Freesat card from sky and use that in the van. It will give me enough channels to watch although my hubby will moan about lackof sports channels! LOl.
When my friend phoned they spouted on about not using it outside of the uk ect, but I could at least agree to all those terms. I should get the card in a few days and then it has to be activated apparently, so it means a phone call again when we put it on.
At least this way I am not going to worry too much as to what sky are or not checking up on.
I think however they must be missing out on hundreds and thousands of pounds income by being so restrictive but thats their loss!
I hope the info on this thread, which has been very useful indeed, will also help other people in the same boat.
