Ah, Peedee, Big Brother really has arrived! The only reason I can think of for new cards is greater control. They state 'for more secure transmission' - what does that mean indeed other than more control. As I said before it really bugs me, the amount of control they already insist on. I am in UK for 6 months and Europe for 6 months. I resent paying £50 per month and only being able to watch it for 50% of the time. I know re contracts etc but I think it is unreasonable.

Looking at other forums, Sky is contractually obliged to replace cards every 5 years? The big question is will the old cards continue to work? I effectively have a Freesat from Sky set up running on my PC with equipment cobbled together from various sources. The card is not registered to my address so I definitely won't be getting a replacement card Sad

Freesat is much easier! That said I run an old sky+ box with a card someone gave me. They have never ever been paired and I have no problem picking up any of the unencrypted channels.

I was also concerned

I ought to qualify this with what I have found out and say I never have any trouble picking up the free-to-view channels some of which are also encrypted, e.g. Sky 3, Fiver, Five US. These are therefore not free-to-air and a card is needed to receive them and it would appear if you do not get a replacement card you will not be able to receive them anymore. It also appears that if you bought a £20 Free-to-view card from Sky and it is older than 3 years this will also not be replaced? Hope that makes sense.

The view is it will take some months before old cards will be switched off and will no longer receive the encrypted free-to-view channels and some of these may well appear on the Freesat EPG before then.
