When I recently acquired my new RV I was keen to make sure that the security was pretty good. It came with a Class 1 Thatcham approved alarm and imobiliser, but I was also interested in fitting a tracker - up until the point where I saw the prices. I know that in comparison to the value of the vehicle £500 or so is not that much, but then you have the annual charges on top and over a few years it's a lot of money. So I started looking around to see what alternatives might be available. Quite by chance I came across something called a Tremblem8, from a small UK company called AlarmTrail. This very clever little gadget is built around mobile phone technology and offers two very useful features. First, it constantly monitors your motorhome (or any other asset you want to protect) by detecting any movement of the vehicle. If such a situation occurs, it immediately sends a text message to your mobile phone, alterting you to the fact that something may be amiss. You can then phone the unit and switch on a built-in microphone so that you can hear any activity in or around the vehicle. Secondly, In the event that your motorhome actually gets stolen, the unit continues to transmit, allowing you to track it, using one of the new web-based mobile phone tracking services. Bear in mind that the positional information given using this system is not as accurate as those that incorporate GPS technology though. Within metropolitan areas, it can be as good as 50m, but in rural areas this may expand to as much as 500m. Nonetheless, it will certainly give the police a pretty good idea of where to look. After all, motorhomes aren't exactly easy to hide..
The unit itself costs just £199+VAT and comes complete with a SIM card for the network of your choice. The web tracking service costs just a few pounds.
I should have mentioned that there is a good manual that you can download from the AlarmTrail site. It tells you just about everything the Tremblem8 does and how you can control it from your mobile phone. Worth a download. http://www.alarm-trail.com/download.php

It appears a cheap way of tracking.. But I think in rural areas the area could be up to several kms rather than 500m, But as you say MH are not easy to hide.....
