Hi vic, the power to drive the unit is about 48volts via the power unit when I'm using the unit for remote applications ie without mains I use a small inverter to drive the power unit it's dose not take much current out of the battery.... I hope that helps...

It's probably on this thread somewhere but I bought an Alfa thing and love it. Great value for money.

It's on this blog page

Yes TC, but how many can you successfully log onto? I have picked up over 40 signals at one location before now, but only been able to log on to perhaps a couple, via BTFon. Sad

Regards,

Jock.

I haven't even hung it out of the window yet, nor put it into the pc, but laptop and netbook indoors both pulling in about 15 signals. Many are of course encrypted neighbours, the rest BTFon and Openzones. Have managed connection to all - albeit weakly with some.

This weekend, I'll try it out in the MH. Same lap and net, so expect good results. Many spots are just about ok for receiving email, but not quite beefy enough to send, especially with pics attached. I hope this kit will end that problem, as well as avoiding the trek to reception to get a signal.

Faculty-X High Gain Long Distance USB Directional Antenna model NET-WL-USB-CPE2512bgn
Long range USB outdoor directional network adapter

- Although I've got one of these
http://www.faculty-x.net/NET-WL-usb-cpe2512bgn

[and it 'appears' to work ok, by which I mean it does pull in many more WiFi signals] - should I be 'tweaking it' to improve search & reception or just leave the settings in their initial settings ?

If I 'tweak it' what settings should I use ?

Apparently netstumbler is a useful aid.

http://www.netstumbler.com/

NetStumbler is a tool for Windows that facilitates detection of Wireless LANs

The download is there somewhere. I don't think it works with Windows 7 but may using compatability mode.

Or there is this;

Not used either would be interesting to hear from someone who as.

I still don't think 18km is bad for an 'outdated' antenna (more info HERE)

Since the above I actually replaced the board in the NET-WL-USB-CPE2512bgn (Faculty X) with an Alfa Realtek 8188 board which is 2W rather than 1W. There was a difference, notably in link quality, but not massive.

Unfortunately the current NET-WL-USB-CPE2512bgn are shipping with a Railink chip which I don't think is as good as the Realtek one.

Alfa have sent me some gear to review, I WILL get around to it shortly.
