Try taking the battery out, my laptop just locks up when the battery is in, works perfectly on mains.
we had this with one of ours, it was not the battery but the mains lead had been pulled out over the year had made the contacts loose in the computer. May need solder.
On some laptops you can "reset" the battery by unplugging the laptop from the mains, removing the battery, and holding down the on/off button for 30 seconds.
It has something to do with discharging a capacitor on the battery charging circuit that resets the charging circuit.
Its also a good idea to run the laptop on battery only, several times until you are warned that its about to shut down, before recharging. This again keeps the battery in good condition, as running on mains all the time is not good for the battery life.
Would help if you could give details of make, model and when purchased. And operating system. Also any mods or upgrades since purchase.
Then someone on here may know something to help you. Almost impossible without these details. Bit like ****ing in the wind.
