I have spoken to the guys who developed this laptop. There are no known issues similar to the symptoms that you have described,
Whilst acer may claim that they have no known issues with these symptoms, in the computing industry, i wouldn't exactly say they are common, but they are certainly not rare.

but without investigating the unit, they believe that the problem is within the power circuit in the laptop. it is possible that there has been a malfunction within this board and it is now protecting itself by forcing a shutdown.
from experience i would say that it is even more likely a component of the board than the power. all pc systems have the capability to switch off under what it perceives to be severe circumstances, this can be initiated by either the os or the hardware, here it is most likely the hardware, as the os would usually, but not always, try to display a blue screened 'stop error'. without further information it's hard to say.
Phil, if you get chance, try turning it on and then pressing either the F2 key or the delete key, as appropriate, to enter the system bios, whilst the bios is displayed leave the system running like that, see if the problem still persists. under these circumstances the hardware will only be interacted with in the most basic manner by the firmware.
Lee,
This is an Advent not an Acer. Otherwise you have agreed with what the experts have said. At the end of the day it is likely to need investigation by an experienced laptop technician to diagnose and solve.

Otherwise you have agreed with what the experts have said.
or they have agreed with what i said in my first post, at this stage in the diagnoses it is still open, they are putting more weight on power, they have stated motherboard, i have stated hardware, it's the same thing in a laptop as most things are intergrated, at this stage i wouldn't discount the drive and although they haven't said it neither would they. it's irrelevant as the diagnoses would reveal the issue.

Exactly right, which is why, as a professional systems engineer, i have offered some of my thoughts and given Phil some steps to take to gather information i could use to start diagnosing the issue, i assure you if i was employed as a laptop technician for advent, this would be a huge step backwards in my career, very few skills are required to run diagnistics software and exchange parts until it works.
