Hello, we are in the process of weighing up the true costs of owning a motorhome prior to taking the plunge. Our budget for the purchase will be £15 for a 4 berth. In addition to the costs, what can I expect to pay for RFL, avergae fuel mpg, services costs, insurance, pitch costs and storage (my driveway isn't big enough.)
We plan to use the MH as much as possible including weekends away.
OK 15K should buy you a decent 2003-4 entry level 4 berth. McLouis are a good value economy van.
Storage £300 a year VED £195, insurance £250.
And as many holidays as you could wish for, breaks away with the National Trust, British Heritage, Club Rallies.
See Wild Wales, Bonny Scotland, Misty Devon, The rampant Yorkshire moors, magical Norfolk and everywhere inbetween.
Or you spend the same annual budget sitting at Luton airport with you belt and shoes in your hand in queue waiting to get crammed into a tube, to meet a load drunks, shouting t'll three in the morning, by pool and buying beer at £9.00 a pint.
Thanks for the info. The last point is the reason we're looking into this, there is so much to see of this country its just not worth going abroad.
My only other concerns are servicing / maintainence costs and pitch costs. Basically, owning, running, and using has got to make financial sense compared to the usual 2 week gettaway. If pitch costs are £40a night it sort of defeats the object.
You can pay anything from zilch to 20 quid, you can stop over sensibly in many places for really reasonable money. If your only there for the night and moving on, free camp. If you need the facilities be prepared to pay your way.
Most of the time I stop over free, but I'm usually only the two of us, and gone in the morning. When planning to linger by a loch or castle, I'll happily pay for the facility.
Put it this way - we are a family of four virtually stuck with school hols now ours are in their teens. Cost of going to Italy for 2 weeks in villa £4k - stuck at Liverpool airport for 4 hours - tins of tuna and butter confiscated as they could be lobbed at the pilot
Year after every third weekend away no worries of dogs in kennels cos they come with us now. Go for 17 days to France best holiday ever had saw more of one Country in those days that 17 years previously with the two weeks package tours!
Servicing relatively cheap as no worse than a car really. Ours VED is £165 and insurance is £425 - kids love it well one of them does. We have never felt fitter with fresh air and the amount of new friends we have now is phenomenal and most of them we like
Have seen more of Britain in last 18 months that have in 20 years. Never fancied Scotland now can't keep us away.
I have two small children, and during the summer months would be looking for, and happy to pay for sites that cater for kids. For weekend breaks we'd be looking for more rural areas, if that makes sense.
Easy, find a spot that's well away from the road, unobtrusive, quiet, safe, not intruding upon others, pull up the handbrake, put on the kettle, and ease back.
As long as you leave nothing but footprints, and take nothing but photographs, nobody minds.
