Sri to ask this again but can someone explain what facilities I would expect from the different sites?
showers, fresh water, drainage? I would prefer basic, no bar etc on site but what do you get?
Well, it depends. Some of the 5 van sites have little or nothing in the way of facilities. Most have toilet, water and emptying facilities. Some have showers, some have hookup.
I don't think any have a bar or anything like it.
If you go to the websites of the CC and C&CC, you can search for the CL / CS sites, and they will show the facilities available.
This is the information for one we're stopping at soon (CL)
Opening Dates
Open all year
Certificated location details
½ac; el pts (meter); wc; shwr; game & coarse fishing ¼m; shingle & sand beach ¼m; open all yr; £8; awning extra.
I think the minimum requirement to be registered as a CL or CS is to provide fresh water and somewhere to dump grey water and to empty toilet cassettes. Some have extras like WCs and showers.
Mainly CLs and CSs are run as a sideline to something else, like a farm, stables or a pub. In the case of a pub there would be a bar, probably with meals available, but otherwise not.
I've just totted it up and of the 6 we've been to 3 were basic necessities, 3 had a WC with wash basin, and 2 had showers as well.
They are all different and, as Gerald has said, the information about each site can be found on the Caravan Club (CLS) and Camping and Caravanning Club (CSs) websites, or in the booklets they send out to members. I think you have to be a member of the Caravan Club to search for CLs on their website.
Are these clubs only open to members or can anyone turn up if there is room. (Sorry. I felt the need to use an inappropriate smiley this morning.)
CLs and CSs are only open to members. Their minimum requirement as has been said is that they must provide water, waste water emptying and chemical toilet dump. Most of them do it not as a means to earn money, but as a courtesy to put some spare land to a use.

I think what I've come to expect most from 20+ years of using CLs and CSs more often than any other type of site is to be surprised and delighted.
In all that time I've only come across one bad egg, the others have all had their high points in one form or other in terms of view, character etc. As others have said, the practical facilities (other than tap and somewhere to empty the bog, even if that involves a spade) vary enormously.
Have just joined the caravan club to see if it makes life any more user friendly when locating places to stay. The smaller sites appeal to us as we are dog heavy and child light.
We are off to Wales tomorrow, staying at the only campsite with spaces- or so it seems!- and no EHU! My personal hate, due to nervousness about our battery life...but I digress.
Will be interesting to see how we fare on future visits, as many of the ones I identified as options for us were members only at the time, and we weren't.
If it does not pan out then I just won't renew next year.
