First off....could I politely request that all MS haters please not comment unless it is relevant. I get your message loud and clear Rolling Eyes

For the record I do love Mac's and one day I intend to own one BUT for the time being I'm fairly happy with what I've got. I suppose my usage is fairly light compared to a lot of people on here. I use the Internet, send & receive emails (Outlook Express & Google mail) and use Word, Excel and a couple of photo editing packages. I also use a very basic accounts package for home use.

So, the subject is Windows 7 and when is it available and will it be available without a browser as some press reports are saying or not.

Anything about it at all.......

Windows 7 Pricing

It won't be released with Outlook Express. (Separate download)
There won't be an 'upgrade' version....a clean install will be required!
The full programme will be priced the same as the old 'upgrades'.

My intention is to continue with XP and Vista and go 7 (pre-installed) when I replace my PCs.

HTH.

PS.....The European (EU) version is the appropriate one for the UK.

So some people are running Windows 7 at the moment then? But is this just a trial version?

What is happening in October? Will it come with a browser or not. News items all have conflicting details.....I'm confused Confused

I don't have anything saved on my laptop at the moment as haven't loaded it with any software. Been using a trial version of Word which is pre-installed. I was thinking along the lines that if Windows 7 was due out soon I might as well wait and get that loaded and do away with Vista which seems to have a few problems (so I'm told Wink ).

I've had Vista this and Vista that but XP with svc pk 3 is absolutely fine for me. In fact there is nothing more I need and as I like to play space games, (only because I am too old ever to even contemplate a trip into the night sky) I potter with X3 Terran conflict which has beautiful artwork and it is just a pleasure to drive around, let alone play the game. I have had all the space games from Elite right through XBTF, X2 X3 and now this. I like trading and building factories and because it is a full time job to play the game properly, I have cheats so I can just play my own thing in one corner of the universe.

Highly recommended for the immature and XP is the way to go to run this beauty - with the right hardware. Cool

p.s. Microsoft do not bring out software to improve the customer satisfaction. They churn them out simply to make money as most new PC's come with their latest software on even thought it is considered rubbish by those that know.

I'm running Windows 7 Release Candidate which is the one before final release (in theory no major bugs Smile. This (free) license lasts for a year but is NOT upgradeable to a full version and so should be avoided unless you like playing around!

Info about the Release Candidate if you're interested is at the following link
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/faq.aspx
Note If you're running Windows Vista, you can install Window 7 RC without having to back up and reinstall your programs and data. But to be on the safe side, please do back up your data before you start.

You can pre-order Windows 7 Home Premium E for £49.99 or Windows 7 Professional E for £99.99. I think this is from the middle of July.

This E version doesn't include Internet Explorer but you'll be able to download and use the browser of your choice (as usual).

Its very much like Vista (same engine basically); its a bit faster to start up/shut down and network management is a bit simpler. The previews are good. But it is just "what Vista should have been".

And you've already seen that you will not be able to do an upgrade install using the E version.

Summary
You can try the Release Candidate out now for a year by upgrading your existing Vista. OR wait until Oct 22 and install the full monty from scratch.
Cheers!

Windows 7, like all new operating systems, go through a number of stages of release before they are available to 'the public'.
This allows development and adjustments to be made before the final release to you and me Wink

Ah, I see. So they use the public as guinea pigs to test it out before the final release....is that it?

I did read somewhere that one of these - maybe the RC one will automatically shut down every 2 hours after the initial 12 months.....or something along those lines.

Thanks for info, I know I wont ever be entirely on top of it all but at least I'm better informed than I was.

By the way...is it true that XP is no longer supported? Don't seem all that long ago it was out.

I've got more support from the Samaritans than ever Microsoft and if your machine is pre loaded don't even bother phoning them up. In fact if MS stop supporting something it normally means it is now at last working as it should.

Now now Pusser, don't go getting all bitter and twisted Very Happy

What I meant was have they stopped the automatic updates for XP.....

I just read this...something else I didn't know.

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) Software

When you get "free" software with a computer you are usually getting "paid for" software, the cost of which has been built into the price for the computer. But is it as good as the retail version of the same software?
OEM software is just as legal and performs the same as the equivalent retail version but it does have some major differences. Firstly, it is a lot cheaper than the retail version. Secondly, it is not to be sold on its own. It is supplied only to computer manufacturers on the condition that they sell it bundled together with the sale of a computer. (Therefore when you see an advertisement for £800 worth of free software that price is in fact the price the software would have cost you if you bought the retail version. The OEM version that you are getting could be worth as little as £100). The third and most important factor is that software manufacturers are usually reluctant to provide you with any support on an OEM version. They'll usually refer you to the person you bought it from who may or may not be qualified to give you the technical help you need.Note also that OEM software may not come with the installation CDs, so if you wish to re-install the software you are stuck.
On OEM software the understanding is that the retailer of the package is responsible for providing you with software support on the package. Does your retailer have the facilities and trained staff to do that? What about when you upgrade to a newer version? Will he still support you? Can he still support you?
Most people underestimate the need for software support. At some point you WILL need help with your operating system. Be prepared.

I found the above info when I Googled OEM as I didn't know what it meant.
