I am not an 'early adopter', I don't wait with bated breath for the latest computer or software release and immediately buy or install. (OS 10.5 Leopard has been out for quite a while and OS 10.6 Snow Leopard is about to be released in the USA I understand and I am still using OS 10.4 Tiger. I have only just got a digital TV.)
This has stood me in good stead in the past what ever the product, its far less exciting that way and certainly cheaper if its hardware and better on your nerves if its software.
When is it time to move on? Well when you can no longer buy a computer magazine and recognise the screenshots or perhaps when you see your computer on a 'retro' feature.
I know someone who is still using Windows 3.11 for all the everyday work and uses his playstation for everything else.

Plusnet, Safari 5, G5 PowerPC iMac running OSX 10.5.8, Salisbury UK : Get behind early - it gives you more time to catch up.
Ah, I see. So they use the public as guinea pigs to test it out before the final release....is that it?
I did read somewhere that one of these - maybe the RC one will automatically shut down every 2 hours after the initial 12 months.....or something along those lines.
Thanks for info, I know I wont ever be entirely on top of it all but at least I'm better informed than I was.
By the way...is it true that XP is no longer supported? Don't seem all that long ago it was out.
As my old Mum used to say "If you can't say anything good, don't say anything"..................
So................. except for "automatically shut down every 2 hours" - how are you meant to know the difference?....
Frank, I would say that I have always adopted the same attitude as you describe up till now. My old PC was purchased 1999 and is still running (only just) on Windows 2000, ditto Word, Excel and OE.
My main interest in Windows 7 is that my new laptop is really a bit of a blank canvas at the present and before I started adding new software to it (or indeed buying a printer ) I thought it might be worth finding out if its better or worse than Vista and then making a decision. If I had bought the laptop a year ago I wouldn't even be looking at changing to it.
We still don't have digital TV. I have an ipod still in its box from a year ago waiting to be loaded up, my car is a Honda CRV (1999) and I wouldn't swap it for a new car for any money. I'm not into computer games so you see my reasons for asking are not because I can't wait to get into new technology.

Oh dear, you will again accuse me (unjustly of course) of having a pop at you ....
Mavis' reply (first in this thread) is a good one. If you are uncertain about Windows 7, then forego the time-limited offers and install the free release candidate now, use for 8 months then decide at end Feb whether to buy. The quality of the release candidate is equal to previous windows first releases.
I've been using it for a few months, installed on 6 machines so far and it's truly excellent.
Like someone said above, it's like Vista should have been.
To my mind it's quicker than XP, supports the latest hardware (xp drivers will be hard to get hold of for new hardware once Win7 comes out) looks really good and it's much easier to configure exotic stuff. Oh and did i say it's free.
Like someone else said get the RC1 with free key and use it for 8 months.
Oh and if you do choose the 'character' backgrounds, really nice looking.
The first line of this thread:-
"First off....could I politely request that all MS haters please not comment unless it is relevant. I get your message loud and clear
Pusser please read it again......some of your stories are great....but why the sniping???

For the record I do love Mac's and one day I intend to own one BUT for the time being I'm fairly happy with what I've got. I suppose my usage is fairly light compared to a lot of people on here. I use the Internet, send & receive emails (Outlook Express & Google mail) and use Word, Excel and a couple of photo editing packages. I also use a very basic accounts package for home use.
So, the subject is Windows 7 and when is it available and will it be available without a browser as some press reports are saying or not.
Anything about it at all.......
If that's all you use yuor PC for I'd stick with whatever you have now if it works, upgrades rarely do what they say on the tin, you need the full monty, then you need to make sure all your drivers work, then the programs, way too much hassle, and not cheap unless you get the academic version.
