We are starting to look for a first motorhome, for our family of four. It includes 2 children who refuse to share a bed, but most of the 4-berth models seem to have 2xdoubles, or 1xdouble and 2xsingles very close together.
Are there any suggestions for models (probably a few years old, budget ~£20K) which have either two singles in different parts of the van, or two bunks? So far I have found the Elddis Autoquest 160 with bunks, and a couple of Hymer Swing models with bunks or drop-down shelf beds. Any more ideas?
our first van was an old G reg hymer 660s, with rear bunks and a drop down bed, this was great however there was no storage space with carrying lots of stuff for kids. we then moved onto a euramobil sport with side bunks and an overcab bed. this was great and had the option of lifting the bunk to make a large garage, however i didnt like sleeping in the overcab. we then moved on to a euramobil 810 A class with twin beds at the rear and a drop down double. the rest is history. it fits all we need. the kids have the space and privacy at the bottom of the van, the dining/seating area is always a dining and seating area and our bed is the comfiest bed ever. it also has a huge garage which carries our scooter, pushchair and numerous other bits for the kids along with all the bits we need generally. its also double floored so the storage goes all under the van.
when we were looking i found alot of vans with bunks had the toilet very close by which we didnt like as it meant disturbing the children to go to the loo. we did look at an adria coral which we liked but stuck with a german van as we ski alot and at the time european vans were alot better winterised. we paid 26k for our euramobil 3-4 years ago and its on an 02 plate. i would definately never have less than a 6 berth van with 2 kids as we love the space it gives us all and the storage.
good luck in your search

Our first van was a hymer with rear bunks for the 2 kids, but we found there was no day time lounging space. I would rather have a rear lounge van and make the beds up? I would have a look at a Swift Kon Tikki 645 or similar or maybe an Autotrail Apache or Scout.
We got fed up having no daytime space and after 18 months we decided to get a bigger van. But no doubt your use will be diffreat to ours and you might have to use a van for a year or 2 until you know exactly what you want/need.
Good luck and dont forget to enjoy the looking and owning.
We have a Hymer B644 with rear U shape lounge. We have 3 young children and find the extra space a necessity. Defo go for 6 berth rear lounge and make the beds up.
If you click on the 'garage' link at the bottom of this post you'll see what we have; Lunar Champ A541 also our 1st MH, but only 1 2yr old child; the two bunk arrangement is flexible, as the lower one can fold up to use as storage thru' the big door on the outside. It's quite a compact first MH at 6m long, and less than 3500Kg too, so parking / access is not too daunting!
4 yrs old, and same budget as you.

If they cannot get on, stick them in a tent next to the van, or an awning with an inner tent. That is what we did with my kids. we slept in the van they had the awning, but separate inners. What a game. It works, and you have a bigger choice of van. I did use campsites though, but the majority of motorhomers do from what I see, unless there are 000s of them painted in camoflage.
Thanks for all your advice - the list of possibles to look out for has grown, and we have a few dealers to visit in the next few weeks to get a better idea of what we do and don't want.
