Ive been looking at the status 530 aerial for our new van and feel that £130 is quite expensive for what it is.
So having noticed how everyone seems to like the Maxview crank up jobby I am trying to justify to SHMBO spending the extra to get this instead.
I havent got a satellite system at home.
A few questions please;
1. I assume I would need a decoder box - how much and which one?
2. I assume I wouldnt need a subscription from sky would I?
3. Can I receive all the current terrestrial channels?
4. What are the benefits over a freeview system to justify the extra?
5. Would I be able to receive UK channels in France?
I should say that although we are going to have a trip over the channel sometime this summer, the majority of our time is spent in the UK.

1) The 12v Comag SL65 is a fabulous box and very versatile (it is also known under version different brand names, Tevion, Silvercrest, Medion, etc),
2) No subs needed for the "Freesat" FTA Channels.
3) Yep (unless you mean terrestrial Digital in which case, no)
4) Accessable from almost anywhere (fields in the middle of the country. As far afield as Spain, etc)
5) Yes.
6) Read up about the Crank-Up first, I have heard reports that it moves about in the wind losing the signal.
1) We have the Maxview decoder box, but it's the same (apparently) as the Comag units supplied by Maplin and Lidl / Netto / Aldi. The Maxview unit is £100, Maplin etc is cheaper.
2) No subscription needed
3) Yes
4) You can get a signal anywhere (subject to line of sight to the satellite - no trees, etc)
5) Depends on how far south, but you should be able to get the channels OK. Most standard dishes start to struggle into Spain and Italy.
Why don't you use a free standing sky dish mounted on a tripod.
You will need to buy a second hand sky viewing box off ebay £15 approx
You will recieve all current terrestial channels that freeview can recieve and in france as well.
You will need a card from sky for £20 one off payment
It is easy to set up on site once you get the hang of it.
Disadvantage is you will need an inverter to run the viewing box.
Hope this gives you something to think about, it is a cheap effective option.
Go to Maplin and buy the free to air box they sell. It is the one normally packaged with their satelite in a suitcase system and is badged Silversrest. This has the advantage of a built in sounder to help you to find the sats and this is all you need. Then contact Snelly who is a member on here and get a crank up from him. You will then get all the normal channels like BBC, ITV Sky News, True Movies etc all the way doiwn to Southern France. If you come further south to here in Spain you will get plenty of channels on Astra 1 including Sky news and MTV germany which can be very entertaining. You will have a system that will run off 12volts which is preferable to using an inverter with a 230volt box. I personally would not even think about a freview box with a status or other aerial. Satellite is the way to go.

I forgot to check if they were mains and 12vdc or just mains.
Even if they are mains only then a small 150w invertor is all thats needed and they are cheap......
Why don't you use a free standing sky dish mounted on a tripod.
The beauty of the Crankup is that it can be set up from within the MH.
When it's dark, raining, cold, or on an aire where you're not supposed to have items outside the MH, the Crankup comes into its own.
With the Silvercrest suitcase system you get a G clamp that allows you to clamp it to your wing mirror or cycle rack. Also if you get one when Lidl have them in you get the whole kit including receiver for less than £30.
