It sounds like Windows Explorer may be your problem (as opposed to IE). I got this sometimes (haven't seen it for a little while), Windows would boot up, then if I try right clicking any icon, etc, that's it - circular timer up and game over. This would also affect trying to start the Task Manager as it's all linked into Windows Explorer. I used to have to reboot then see if it was ok.

Ideally what you need to be able to do is start Task Manager, kill the "exporer" task then run a new task "explorer", the problem obviously being that you can't start Task Manager Exclamation

I would try and get Service Pack 2 installed and see if this cures the problem (I haven't seen it since but may be just coincidence as mine is it a bit more intermittant than what you're describing). If you can't get it to install from auto update, the full install can be downloaded from the M$ support pages.

Never had these problems on XP Evil or Very Mad

Hi Bradderz,

Thanks for your efforts.

Can get the computer going after a few attempts at re start, so will give that a go tomorrow.

Never happens on a real computer - Mac Laughing

Best regards

Chris

Perhaps you should load it up in "SAFE MODE". Some computers are different but generally you get into safe mode by pressing F8 as it boots. You get the option to load windows with the minimal set of drivers necessary to run the PC.

Once in safe mode use "System restore" to go back to such a time when the computer was functioning properly (if you can remember). See:

Using system restore in Vista

Don't confuse system restore with a clean install of windows. System restore should always be tried first. You don't loose any files or configuration, apart from any programs that were installed since the date you restored to.
