Speaking as someone who refills his own cartridges with toner you are not comparing like with like.
With a new cartridge you get a new roller and most importantly a new photo sensitive roller.
If you want to have perfect results all the time new is the only way. In any event you do need a new cartridge from time to time to replace the photo sensitive roller.
Some of you seem to be down on refilling, I know inkjets are a joke sometimes, but even new ones are rubbish sometimes, but I thought the technology for Toner was a lot more reliable.
Are all these bad don't do it posts about Toner or ink, as I don't need ink.

No - the general ideas expressed here apply equally to inkjet and laser.
I have a very reliable ten-year old HP 8100 laser printer. I can get original HP cartridges for around £150. I can refilled ones for about £60. Is it a no-brainer? The refilled ones give me about half the number of printed pages as the HP originals and are still using some of the old HP components beyond their designed life. HP originals for me, every time.

There is a big difference in price between buying a refilled toner cartridge and refilling your own.
For my printer new about £70
refilled about £40
Toner to refill your own about £8 -£9
It is true that you are taking the cartridge well past its design life but unless you need perfect quality they will do it.
I have also tried refilling ink jet cartridges but have found that unsatisfactory
As we only use it to print a few menus, the odd letter or so, the quality is fine, If we needed good print out's we'd go for a good inkjet printer, as they have always been better than lasers.
I think we'll go with a bottle of toner and see how we get on, it's just a matter of finding out which supplier has the best toner.
