Hi

My pals lap top will not connect to the internet via the dongle and the following error message is shown when trying to connect MSN messenger

"Your machine appears to have an invalid IP address"

What does that mean and what is the fix? I think he has done a system restore already and to no avail.

Does the IP address belong to the laptop or the dongle?

Russell

If it is a USB dongle then the IP address belongs to that. If you want to give me a phone I am around for about 20-30 minute before going out.

Hi

when you say dongle; are you refering to wireless or gsm type adaptor?

if you click on start > run then type 'cmd' without the quotes and press enter; a command prompt will open, then type ipconfig /all and press enter so that the computers network interfaces and their ip addresses are listed, note that if you have wireless and/or wired network interfaces these will also be listed. you should be able to see which belongs to the dongle and what it's ip address is. it initially sounds like the interface either doesn't have an ip address assigned or that it has an address from one of the private ranges which cannot be used on the internet as they are non routable.

Just to add to lgbzone's post,
"if you click on start > run then type 'cmd' without the quotes and press enter;"
If you are using Vista, when you type in the "cmd" you will see the Cmd icon appear in the search box. Right click on that and select "Run as administrator" and then carry on as Lgbzone says.

If the IP address is not satisfactory use the following two commands, pressing return after each:

ipconfig /release
which clears the addresses allocated. and then

ipconfig /renew
which allocates a new IP address

Hi

Investigations reveal the following...

1) My dongle and my sim works on my laptop.

2) My dongle and my sim works on their laptop

3) Their dongle and their sim will not allow internet access at all

4) Their dongle and my SIM will allow a connection!

Strange but true.

Russell

You mean "my" dongle Smile

Sounds like their SIM is not set up for internet access; or its blocked; or it has a problem; or indeed its a different supplier/APN than yours.

This begins to sound like it has nothing to do with IP addresses and might be a sim that isn't enabled for data Confused

Is it a "3" dongle and sim? There is a setting within the software which needs to be the same as the setting on the sim. If you send me the details (in a PM) I'll get it checked out.

Cheers
Alan

Hi

My pals SIM card had stopped working and all the credit taken. THREE investigated and said there had been an error and recredited their account with a tenner.

All ok now, but I would have expected to see an error message such as "internet explorer cannot be opened" rather than the waffle about the ISP.

Russell
