Glad to see it's sorted.

Just incase you're interested, the dongle has failed to connect and therefore hasn't received its ip address, using dhcp, from the isp, when dhcp fails like this it the operating system assigns it an ip address from the 169.254.*.* non routable private range. hence when you try to use the connection the os states that the ip address is invalid, as it's private and therefore can't be used on the internet. the problem here (like you say) is that the dongle software ideally should have told you earlier that it hasn't connected so you wouldn't have bothered trying to use it, the developers/designers obviously didn't think it through.
