after having played cd's and dvd's with no problem and also ripping them,my newish hp laptop is refusing to recognise either. I went back to curries and they will send it away under warranty but say it may take 4 weeks and we leave for france in 2 weeks.
I am thinking about getting an external drive.

any advice please.

best wishes

Go to device manager, navigate to your drive, right-click and uninstall it. Reboot and it will reinstall it. This may help.

Otherwise, try a system restore to a date prior to when you knew it was working. I am sure there are other alternatives but I can't think of them at the moment. I will check google when I have time.

Check to see if the player is set to the correct region.

Region 1 N. America. Region 2 Far East (?). Think Europe is region 3.

I think Europe is Region 2 - I hope so as I have just bought a new DVD recorder!

the saga continues, I did the uninstall and reboot and got the message
"this device cannot start code 10.

Windows offered a check and came up with "you have the best device for your computer"

any ideas??

i have been looking for European region 2 but cannot find it or any other.

in hope

cheers

Windows will automatically set the drive to region 2 when you set the country t first installation. If you install a new DVD drive you will set the region at first connection.

Read this DVD player driver problems with Windows Vista Code 10

I'm sure this will sort it out.

Tim

tried that link and printed out instructions, managed to work my way through them and to my delight it worked .....for a while.

i played a cd then ripped a cd, and played that, then i played a dvd, a little later i tried to play another cd and it would not load, same with dvd so i am back to square one.

Thank you so much for your help, I am now going back onto that site to see if this has happened to anyone else

cheers, Bill

Bill,
Have you possibly got a problem with the ripping software? Might be worth running a full virus scan, but then you have probably already done that.
