tried that link and printed out instructions, managed to work my way through them and to my delight it worked .....for a while.
i played a cd then ripped a cd, and played that, then i played a dvd, a little later i tried to play another cd and it would not load, same with dvd so i am back to square one.
Thank you so much for your help, I am now going back onto that site to see if this has happened to anyone else
success at last. I followed the thread again and read more comments etc it turned out that the problem was also related to adobe
the gist of it was I had to un-install adobe go through the registry stuff again then re-install adobe, and all was well.
while i was on i deleted java from my laptop because i was always getting messages and having to get updates and i dont really know how useful it is.
thank you everyone you would not believe the reams of instructions i had had from hp help in which i had got lost.

i went back to the original thread and was directed to adobe who advised uninstalling it going through the registry bit again and reinstalling adobe, this has now solved the problem.
