We have a 3 year old HP laptop running Windows XP. The screen has failed & we are using it through a monitor. We are thinking of getting a notebook also running XP.
1) Can we connect the two together & use the notebook as the screen for the HP Laptop.
2) How do we get all of our programs and downloads from the laptop onto the notebook.
3) We have a lot of hardware that has installation disc's camera printer & so on. How do we get these to work when a notebook does not have a disc drive.
I have been to PC world to ask these questions and all I get I don't know or you have to buy all new gear.
Could someone explain in simple terms how this could be done.

Technically it is possible to link the two machines in a small network. Either using a broadband router (if it allows more than one PC to connect) or by using a cross-over network cable.
When the two machines are in a network then files and even devices (cd/dvd drive) can be shared across said network. Data can then be transfered.
You will not be able to transfer programs. You will need the original installation cd/dvd and install from that. Again this can be done across the network sharing the cd/dvd drive.
It sounds like this may not be something you would like to try yourself but a tame techie or a friendly PC shop would be able to set this up and show you how to use the network.
There is also a free downloadable software that would enable you to make the new one display the old ones screen. Do a google search for VNC. This is a program that can take control of another displaying that screen.

Hi Steve
As Keith has said; use a crossover cable and create a small workgroup, it's not difficult so post or pm me if you want and i'll guide you through it, at the weekend i'm going away for a couple of weeks in the hymer.
Once you have copied data across, either do as Keith has said and copy the installation files from the laptops cd drive, or take the opportunity to download the latest ones from the manufacturers website.
VNC is excellent software for remotely using a pc, alternatively windows remote desktop facility will probably do the job, again if you need any help give us a shout. if you consider getting a new screen to replace the damaged one; rolta it ltd are very good (http://www.rolta.co.uk/), i've used them many times and they have never let me down, chances are a new screen will be considerably cheaper than £100 and they're easy ti fit, alternatively the will fit it for you for £20.

Lee,
You're assuming the netbook has an ethernet port, unfortunately most netbooks do not have one. They rely on a wifi connection.
Transferring files is not too difficult provided all of the drives on the original PC have been set to share.

Hi
good point, i am assuming there's a wired network port, although to be honest, i've only ever come across one that didn't have one, a compaq mini note.
Steve
If it doesn't have an rj45 port, you'll need a usb2 to rj45 adaptor, they're about £10 from www.scan.co.uk
No one has asked what Steve wants to do with the netbook. You mentioned installation disks for camera, etc, so are you expecting to do some photography work with it?
As someone said earlier, netbooks are designed for a particular type of use in mind, and it may be your intended use would be better suited to a 'full' laptop.
I have a Samsung NC10, which has a 10.1inch screen and I use corel draw version 11 which runs very well but I have installed 2gig of ram. It has an ethernet port and the battery life is up to 9 hours. My wife has the NC20, which has the 12.1 inch screen, again an excellent netbook

Quite right, Gerald. This is one of the problems with the forum, sometimes when you get into a discussion you answer one point and miss other salient issues. In a conversation you can turn the subject round.
Steve, can you tell us exactly what you want to achieve from your new purchase.
