hi all, just wondered if any of you computer wizards can help me? got a compaq presario v5000 laptop, yesterday i copied my photos off the hard drive to free up some space and done a defrag on c and d drives. last night i was using the laptop and it turned itself off. it was plugged into the mains at the time and it has a new battery(4 weeks old). with a battery in the compartment( the new or old) it boots up then after about 30 seconds turns off?? if i remove the battery then it works(most of the time) sometimes it has turned off as well. i wonder if i have altered or deleted something inadvertently? sorry to be a pest but this really isnt my field, thanks in advance sean
I can't offer a solution but I have the same problem with an elderly Toshiba Satellite laptop. It only happens when I have the Belkin wifi gizmo plugged in and working and we think it is because the gizmo is taking more current than the power supply is capable of providing.
I don't know how old your machine is but could it be that the extra processing involved in dealing with photos is too much for it ?

my aspire laptop does exactly the same, when it does I find it to be very warm in one corner, I then realise that the fan has not been running!!

thanks pusser and grizzly, its not the fan as it does this from cold. its like the laptop is not charging the battery as the new one only says 3% on it and the icon at the bottom of the screen says "on ac" and doesnt say "charging" like it normally does, regards sean
If you don't use it away from the mains then just take the battery out, it will work just the same. The other things to check are the power options, they may have been changed by mistake. You can usually find them on the screensaver page, right click anywhere on a blank part of the desktop left click on properties and then screensaver and at the bottom is power options.
hi randonneur, done that before a few times , no dice! at the moment i have it running without any battery in it, seems to run fine. if i then put the battery in then it turns off in less than a minute! cheers for the reply sean

Hi
Ironic, mine while attached to mains just keeps booting up when you switch it off, but disconnet the mains and it goes off as it should.
