hi randonneur, done that before a few times , no dice! at the moment i have it running without any battery in it, seems to run fine. if i then put the battery in then it turns off in less than a minute! cheers for the reply sean

Hi

if i were you i would try to find someone with the same model, or very similar that uses the same battery, borrow their known good battery and try it in your laptop (under identical circumstances), if it's ok with their battery then your battery could be the problem. if the problem persists try their power brick, if that cures it then it could be your power brick at fault, if not then it could be the circuitry in your laptop.

this is assuming you have totally ruled out heat which is the most common cause of systems simply stopping (turning off without shutting down) without warning.

I can't offer a solution but I have the same problem with an elderly Toshiba Satellite laptop. It only happens when I have the Belkin wifi gizmo plugged in and working and we think it is because the gizmo is taking more current than the power supply is capable of providing.

I don't know how old your machine is but could it be that the extra processing involved in dealing with photos is too much for it ?

Hi grizzly

assuming the wifi adaptor is usb, bear (no pun intended) in mind that the usb bus only provides 500ma output to the device, which shouldn't be enough to cause a problem. it's more likely the devices driver, i would check for an updated driver or try a different wifi adaptor and see if that stops it. after saying that, i did see it once when a server was acting very irratic due to its power supply not supplying enough amps for the amount of hardware installed.

if you have a usb small external hard drive, you could try that instead of the wifi adaptor, if it is power the hard drive should cause the same issue, don't use a full size, 3.5 inch, usb hard drive as they need a seperate power source.

Thanks from both Safariboy and Grizzly.

The computer is USB 1.1 and the WiFi dongle is USB 2.0/1.1. My theory is that the WIFI dongle uses more current than the USM1.1 can provide particularly when it is receiving a weak signal and the USB power supply cannot provide it for a long period. The power supply in the computer gets hot and cuts out.

Hi

i didn't consider usb1.1 and i don't actually know how much the usb1.1 bus can supply, i'll have a google later.

it would be worth checking in device manager, if you connect the wifi device then look in device manager in the universal serial bus controllers section, there will be several entries, right click on them, one by one, and select properties from the menu, if there is a tab that states 'power', click on it and it will list any devices connected to the port, go through them until you find the wifi device listed, once you've found it, it'll display how much power the device is using, it's realtime so click the refresh button to update it, keeping an eye on this could indicate whether you're on the right track.

Cheers
