Hi
I am currently using SLY SKY as my broadband suppler/ It works fine with no complaints other than the £17 per month it costs me. (SKY Connect) The cost is high due to my location they tell me. No problems with AOL except they are useless.
Anyway, the question is
I like and need the "CHAT" facilty on SKY. It enables me to set up numerous folders in which to file emails from various people and has a huge storage capacity.
Is there another ISP who has a similar facilty at a more competitive price?
I also believe once an email account is set up, in the case of SKY, I can retrieve emails from that address even though I do not have a SKY account? I can collect through SKY my old AOL emails without any problems.
Thanks in anticipation
Dennis

If others are like me, lack of response may be because they're not clear what Sky chat is. From a quick google, it appears to be an enhanced instant messenger service. Is that the case? If so, and you want to continue to IM with your existing contacts, then you're a bit stuffed. If you can live with another IM (and a new circle of friends!), then perhaps look at an ISP-independent instant messenger such as windows messenger. Or look at independent "IM integrators" such as iloveim and meebo.
On email, Sky may be the exception that proves the rule, but in general if you cancel your ISP service, you also lose the email address. On the whole, using an ISP email address is a bad thing, as they're not portable between providers (there has been some talk of regulating such things by the European Commission, in the way that number portability allows you to take your number portability allows you to keep your number when you change telecoms provider, but so far it's come to nil). You're far better using an ISP-independent address, either by getting your own .co.uk/.com domain (then directing it to the ISP email account) or using hotmail or gmail. If you're using a Sky-specific mail address, almost certainly if you change provider you'll have to change address - don't make the same mistake with your next provider.
If you're paying a higher rate with Sky because you're in the wrong place, this means that you must be off their Local Loop Unbundling (LLU) footprint hence they're dependent on BT wholesale services. If you check on Sam Knows, you'll be able to get a listing of the providers that have LLU in your area...ie they've physically deployed their kit in your local exchange to minimise the BT involvement. Chances are they'll be the cheapest, but you'd need to research whether they provide the facilities you want. If Samknows indicates you're in "Market One", BT has a defacto monopoly so you're not going to be able to get the best pricing as everyone's just reselling their service.

The ability to collect Email from an old account is usually tolerated for a while but it is unlikely to be permanent. After I changed ISP last my previous (Orange) ISP continued my Email account for around 12 months but then suddenly cut it off completely without notice leaving me with no access whatsoever. I would advise moving all your important contacts to the new ISP Email account ASAP.

Many thanks for your replies.
SKY chat is their terminoligy for emails, nothing remotely like IM or any equivalent. When I receive an email I have the options to delete it or "trash" it, Archive in a general "held" folder or, and this is the good bit, create a folder and file it in there. There are almost unlimted folders so I can file all emails from x in one file, y in another, z in another etc. Very handy for quick reference to finding saved emails from specific people who may be in regular contact with all the other odd ones going in a "archive" folder.
I have the optios of forwarding emails to other accounts on other ISP which is quite common I believe, but I also have the option of collecting emails from other accounts. For example I collect from 2 other email accounts 1 at Tiscali and 1 AOL both of which I have not had an account with for nearly 2 years (in the case of AOL) I don't need an account with Tiscali as it is a free service for emails.
It is the file part that I would like to replace. You are correct about being outside the LLU for SKY, hence the extra costs. This did not seem a problem with AOL, but we all know AOL!
Thanks agoan for you help.

Why dont you set up a web mail account with Yahoo, or MSN, you can do the majority of what you want on those, then you are not dependant on any ISP, and you can shop around for the best deal.
I have had Yahoo.co.uk since internet started, and have changed ISP several times.
The easiest way is to create yourself a new free email account on say Google or Yahoo and go into your archives and forward all those emails to your new account. Problem solved I think unless the size of the files are an issue.
I use Incredimail which brings my emails from 2 email accounts into one space on my hard drive and then if I want to keep them I create the folders accordingly.
With Google mail you can archive them using their system if you want to although Incredimail picks them up they are not deleted from Google mail unless you physically delete them.
Thanks
I have tried Incredimail and found it to be quite poor as it tends to loose emails into "cyberspace" only for them to re appear weeks/months later and emails are duplicated over many weeks.

Do either of these have a "file facilty" using multiple folders?
The trouble with all these ISP providers is that they tell you how fast their service is, how cheap it is and how many email address's you can have, but none show the actual mechanics of their email system.
I will take a look at Google as I think SKY may use Google somewhere in thier system.
Thanks again
