I've resized the MTU on my lappy to 1432 using the registry editor The problem I had accessing Southdowns still exists on my laptop but not on the desktop which has left me perplexed
After changing the MTU on the desktop (Vista) IE speeded up considerably & allowed access to the pages I couldn't previously get onto. The same hasn't happened with the laptop (XP)
As you can no doubt tell I'm a rank amature when it comes to computers. Any further light you may be able to shed on this will be gratefully recieved.
First thing that comes to mind is to check you are altering the mtu for the correct interface on the laptop, on the vista machine it was the lan (ethernet) interface, on the laptop it's the wireless (IEEE 802.2/802.3) interface, they both have different default values and different settings to change/add, the settings in the registry represent a combination of protocol and interface, i suspect you have done the same procedure on the laptop as on the desktop so it won't work unless you connect the laptop using a LAN cable. i don't know the exact registry settings to change for wireless and i can't look it up at the moment, try google for now and if you can't find it i'll have a look later.
Just occured to me, doh, if you use the drtcp program to do it, you select the interface from a dropdown list, select the wireless adaptor, this way you don't need to know the registry entries as the program writes them.
I've included an image of the dr tcp interface below, there are several settings, leave everything as it is when you first run the program, not changing them means they stay as they were. the exception being the bottom part entitled 'adaptor settings', there you need to select your wireless card, i've selected mine in the image, i can tell it's the wireless as it has intel pro abg in the text, i have other options such as one with broadcom in the name, which is my LAN adaptor, you may need to check in device manager for the name of your wireless adaptor. once the adaptor is selected; put 1432 or whatever in the little text box to the right entitled MTU, then click save. this will set the mtu for the wireless on the laptops.
