Best option may be to take it back to the shop and get them to test it for you. Provided they are not Comet or Currys they should be able to get it set up in no time, or prove that it is faulty.
Very difficult to diagnose computer issues over a forum as the suggestions and answers cannot be interactive.

thanks relay and gerald

tried searching under start and no such application or file on laptop

have tried to see if network connection is available and have tried to use diagnostic tool to fix the problem and all it keeps saying is turn on the wireless button on front of machine which i have done!! still no light and still not recognising a wireless adaptor!

but on mooching whilst trying the above i found a button with add/configure a wirelss device it searched a for a while and i waiting with everything crossed and it said no device found on machine - errm that was a bit worrying to say the least !!

guess its now a call to pc world?hummpph - i hate calling them and i've binned the box - i know a bit premature after only 3 days but you just can't keep everything ...

I thought if you hovered your mouse cursor over "Start", you opened up a menu to the right, and the "Control Panel" is one of the options on the menu.

Maybe a trip back to the shop would help. Do you still have the receipt?

Gerald

This might sound silly but do you have a wireless router? The laptop will not find a connection if you don't nor will it if none of your near neighbours have one.

Just a thought!

Go to start, connect to, find available networks. It will come up with a list, one of which will be yours - click on and set as default network.

Thanks for letting us know. Glad it's fixed, although it might help others in the same boat if your son told you (or dictated to you, or posted under your name) what he actually did. On MHF, we like to share information we receive. Someone could come along soon with the same problem, and it would be nice to be able to point them back at this thread with information on what to do.

Sounds like a young lad Wink I have a stepson who can run rings around an old hand like me, but I always make sure he tells me what he's doing Very Happy

ok will do next time i see him! he's back at uni now doing his final year in law so might not be his highest priority!! Laughing - may be a while but i will try and tie him down - appreciate the comments and how the forum works! if i can help others i am always willing although not sure if anything i've learned in life so far would be much use to the majority on here! Wink will give him my login info and as you say he might post it direct for me! that way it might end up making sense! ... Rolling Eyes
