Hi all,

Need some help with GPS logging!

I have 118 GPS co-ordinates in an EXCEL spreadsheet, listed in the decimal format e.g. 52.12345 / 6.56789.

They were recorded from TOMTOM manually each evening (or fudged by looking at Google Earth at a later date).

Is there a way to drop or import this data into a programme (like Google Maps or Earth) which will then show me a plotted course for our journey?? I'd really like to take a screenshot for our blog! Plus it'd help us visualize the drive thus far.

For the techies amongst you:
Currently column A has the day no. of our trip (1 to 100), column B has the date of the stopover (in the format '24th June 2009'), C has the lat value, D has the lon value. Should i format the columns in a particular way prior to import??

Any suggestions greatly received!

Massive thanks in advance!

I can submit the file (.XLS) if necessary.

Note: some co-ords are repeated as we spent several days in one place, therefore the actual no. of GPS values may be nearer 80 than 100.

Paul

It will load directly into Autoroute I think, and each point will appear as a pushpin. Dead easy to plot the route then.

Apologies if I'm wrong and it needs a bit of jiggering - but it is possible!

Let us know if it works, and if not I'll have a play later when I'm a bit less busy.

Got me intrigued now!!!!

In Autoroute, go to File > New > Import Data Wizard.

Follow the dialogue boxes and choose "Comma" when asked to Choose the character that separates your fields.

If your first row does not contain column headings, untick the relevant box at the next step - and don't forget to specify which country the places are located.

It worked for me?

Hi

To display your waypoints in Google earth you will need to convert the .xls file to a .kml file

There is a good little program that is free that I think will do it ( never tried to do that conversion but sure it will Wink ) :

POI Converter <<<

Hi Steve the new version of Tyre is for the Garmin as well, but no idea if its Mac compatable.

Just to clarify Tyre will plot a route between points if you load the file into it, and calculate the distance, as far as I know the others don't, they just show the poi's on the map.

And yes Mike your programme will convert to Kml as will my favourite, poiedit

On the MAC I use something called LoadMyTracks.

I'm not sure of all the formats that it supports but I will confirm that Garmin (760) log files are OK.

Hi all,

Cheers for responses.

Unfortunately I do not own Autoroute, so i think Google Earth or 'Open Street Maps' are my only alternative.

I've attached the reworked file as an example of the formatting...

date is dd/mm/yyyy hh:mm format, but i think Google Earth mistakes this for a place name?

Ideally the output of all this would be a visual map showing the journey from start to finish, including the movement between points like you see on a google maps itinerary. I could remove some repeated values to simplify it a little! Place name are available in separate sheet (v.easy to marry up).

Cheers.
