Hi All,

My camera club have a competition on Avebury and Stonehenge coming up. I decided to look at sunsets on the day after the last great sunset Crying or Very sad

However as the evening sky started to clear and the moon started to rise I decided to take a few shots of the stones against the night sky.

Best regards

Chris

Hi Mavis, Dave and Gerald,

It was a very interesting evening as the reason for not seeing one of those beautiful red sunsets we had for a couple of weeks is there was too much cloud in the West.

Then from the East the sky started to clear up and the moon was rising.

A confession! My original picture had the moon in, but because I had to expose the picture for about 30 seconds the moon looked more like a star with bursts of light coming out of it. Basically it looked wrong. So the moon was removed and the following night I took a picture of a near full moon in a clear sky at about 01:00 in the morning.

I pasted this moon into the picture and hated it! Hence you now have this rather 'spooky' feel to an Avebury picture.

Will try and get back early one morning with mist around the stones.

Regards

Chris

The two stones to the left look as if they are talking to each other.
I have beenn to Avebury severel times andstood on the mound.
these type of ancient monumets fill me with wonder and inquisitiveness.
Have you seen the stones at Carnac in Brittany. Just like rows of soldiers.

The stones at Stonehenge do seem magical but I have never been in these places at night ---being a tourist you go home and miss the atmosphere that Chri's photo captures.
Shall we all meet up and hold hands as the sun rises. Laughing

Hi Dave,

Not been to Carnac in Brittany, will put that on my list for next trip.

Hi Mavis,

I have lived in this area since 1987 and like others I really wanted to visit Stonehenge and did in the days you could walk around and touch them. I was, I'm afraid very disappointed. It was the reason I applied for the General Managers job some years ago to run the site. In my opinion they are missing many tricks that could make it a really exciting place to visit.

Avebury is a different matter altogether! I have walked around the stones and in particular on the mound that surrounds them. The feeling is very difficult to explain, but 'mystical' may be the right word. It is not just me, everyone I have taken there explains that they also feel something that they cannot explain.

However this 'feeling' only seems to be when walking around the surrounding mound, I have never felt it amongst the stones!

At our camera club, we recently had a speaker called Peter Knight who has written many books on the subject and I bought 'The Wessex Astrum' off him on the day. Check out his web site:

http://www.stoneseeker.net/

It is going to be him that is judging the photos. So it will not necessarily be a good photo, but one that is going to give him more of a 'mystical' inspiration! So I am working on it!

Best regards

Chris
