On reflection, it is a slant on "sell the dead horse raffle" where the winner gets his stake back when he "discovers" that the horse is dead. All the other punters have funded the whole scam.

As I understand it, the 819 bids were placed by the winner, hence those figures, including savings refer only to him/her.

Assuming the auction started at zero pounds, the total number of bids will be 50 x 111.54, so 5577@ 50p a shot (slightly less if bids bought in bulk I think), so they make £2788 ish plus the winning bid of £111.
