Our lass has a problem connecting the 300D to a Vista PC, it just doesn't see it, but it sees my 400D with no problem, so for now I'm putting her CF card in my camera and downloading that way, but it's not a good idea as CF's are very vulnerable to pin damage.
I've got the Cannon software installed but it's pure junk, I could use a card reader, but that just gives the same problem with the pins.

Just had the same type of problem; the wife's Vista (Home Premium) machine would not recognize my EOS 5D, I downloaded the driver, VU600EN.exe, off the Canon website here: http://software.canon-europe.com/software/0026123.asp?model=, and it now works perfectly. That driver may also work for your 300D, I believe it you can use it for the 20D, etc.
I have just spent 2 days trying to get my XP laptop to recognise the same 5D; I had previously downloaded all my photos via a card reader but wanted to take some computer controlled shots using EOS Utility; I downloaded the relevant XP driver and it still does not work properly, what I have to do is open DPP, then Tools, EOS Utility then I can control the 5D from Utility that way.
The best way to download is stick your Compact Flash card into a card reader; it is much quicker that connecting your camera and I have never, ever had any pin damage.
Firstly, I'd always recommend using a Card Reader rather connecting the camera directly. There are usually less problems and I've never liked the idea of having my camera sitting around on the desk while it downloads.
The damaged pins problem is very unlikely and no more so than damaging the connector on the camera. In fact the number of insertions you can do with a Compact Flash card is higher than most camera/usb connectors.
Secondly, if you want to still use the camera, check the Setup Menu #2 > Communication and make sure its set to Normal.
Thanks Colin, I'll look into the setup later, as for pin damage, my camera shop warned me about it as they have as many repairs in for that reason as any other, but is easily avoided by leaving the card in the camera, USB faults were much rarer and cheaper to fix.
I suppose that either way is going to cause a problem for some and not others, I take great care though when plugging in anything as plugs themselves are often broken with rough handling.
We have a Canon 350D and 400D, and I've never transfered data direct from the camera. I've always used a card reader as I wouldn't want to be restricted to using only one CF card. Normally I'd fill two or three CF cards on a day out with the camera.
In all the years using digital cameras i have never had any CF cards go faulty, due to pin damage. Dropping in puddles yes, but not due to putting them in and out of a camera/PC.
The only good thing about the canon software is the stitch programme which I use alot.
Otherwise I transfer from file manager (My Computer) and into pre designated directories.

You won't have any cards going faulty with pins as there are none, they are in the camera. I have however managed to bugger up 2 card readers so far but only on the CF section, the technology is very vulnerable to physical damage, hence my reluctance to remove the cards, I use a 4gb and download every so often, I have yet to fill it.
