Been watching prices on solar panels for a while and noticed a deal on ebay for an 80w panel at £159 delivered.. !

80watt panel £159

Took the plunge a few weeks ago and bought one along with a controller they sold.. Had a bash at DIY fitting with the help of comments and tips given on MHF.. Pleased to announce it's on and working.. Very Happy
Were off to Spain on saturday so can give it a good try out..

UPDATE.... Link is now out of date here is a new one as of 1/9/2010.

Solar panel + regulator + fixing glue + delivery £189..

How about a pic? Where have you mounted it? Will you have to position it when set up or is it fixed? What about wiring up?

Hope not too many questions Steve,

Graham

Am I on mastermind.. ??? Very Happy

Pics... It looks like the one on ebay !! They all look the same to me.

I have mounted it flat on centre of roof, so it's fixed not adjustable.
Bought some ali angle iron from B&Q yo make 4 brackets to raise it off roof. Fixed down with silkaflex.

Wiring up was pretty straight forward, Hole above wardrobe (same route they used for my sat dish) Cable down inside the wardrobe and along floor to battery compartment inside rear locker under U lounge. I have positioned the regulator there mounted on the wall. Fused connection then to the battery.

I have done some pics and was planning a "how i did it" guide but no time to complete as were off for a month on Saturday.. Maybe when i get back..

Solar panel £159
Regulator £19
Extension solar cables £10 ?
Roof entry box £8
Sikaflex £6 ?
Angle ali and screws for brackets £12
5 mrt red and 5mtr black 4mm2 power cable £12
Fuse holder and battery connections £8

So in all about £236..

I have relied on a lot of info from this site, which has helped re the installation.. Silly things like connecting the battery to the regulator before the solar panel.. Would never have though of that..
Will try and give a bit more feedback on the system later..

We were in Benidorm (like you will be) between 29th Dec and 8th Feb.

We have an 85w panel, which I also fitted myself, and despite the below average weather this time, the panel served us well.

I run all my lighting - a mixture of strip and LED and the 15" LCD TV on the 12v system. We were in 3 nights out of 4 and the TV would often be on for 5 hours per night.

My panel was feeding the 2 off, 110A batteries I have and I only had to switch the battery charger on 4 times during the stay and that would have been for a maximum total time of 10 hours - so they do work!

With electricity charged at about 40p per unit by the sites its worth doing but in addition there is some sort of satisfaction gained in having the knowledge that your van can more or less look after itself! Yes sad I know.

BTW in the summer in France, and whilst I know your consumption is less, the batteries were usually showing as fully charged by 10am every day.
