We looked at them briefly, when we moved from a tent, but couldn't understand the logic behind the idea.
I suppose if you already have a pick-up, but caravans are cheaper and less picky about the base vehicle, only real up side is the dubious off road capability, but again any decent pick-up will drag a caravan anywhere reasonable.
I do see your point and I am not here to argue that dismountables are by any means the bees nees but-simply it is a motorhome that splits into an everday vehicle, built for the european market so the caravan comparison I dont think is an issue for the target market.
Limited rather then dubious is problably a better way to explane the off road capacity as I feel these models lean more towards the adventure market than just leasure camping(or is that just me wanting to be the big adventurer ) Have a look on you tube and there are a few vids of dismountable's being hammered off road!
It was an expensive bit of kit when new but I got it second hand and could not justify the new cost, I think they are about 70,000 euro new for both but Bimobil are a high quality small outfit in munich that pride's itself on its conversions.
It is 10 years old now and nothing more than a locker catch has broken! except for a new shower tray due to an accident by the previous owner, repired at the factory last year,OMG German labour costs
Thanks Darren, I wasn't looking for an argument either, just some justification for something a bit small and IMHO a bit quirky to look at.
I have the same problem when I see the prices for models based on a Berlingo or similar, I see the point of the vehicle, just, but cannot see any justification for the price.
Ciao peejay, really glad you started this sub-forum. I too am really interested in this type of setup. Recently swapped my Chausson coachbuilt for a Merc car and some cash; but would really like to find a LR 130 twin cab, and then put a demountable on it. Have sourced a couple of said LR's within striking distance of here, around the €15000 mark, and not high Kms. Up near Bergamo is a firm which specialises in demountable bodies. What is really putting me off is the high cost of transfer of ownership/insurance, Just paid out €1500 for transferring the Merc plus insurance, and would find myself having to do the exercise again. Also, have to ask myself if I and Donna C could really cope with the physical side of handling on/off? Anyway we'll keep looking.
saluti,
eddied
Eddie, you might already have these, a few Italian companies to keep you busy ....
Hi Peejay,
Sorry it's been a few days before I noticed your post but thanks very much for your kind reference to the 'stuff about Demountables' website.
Cheers,
Martin (aka saDgit from 'stuff about Demountables')
We had a Northstar demountable on a Nissan D22 single cab for a year and it was great.............but not for this country! on the plus side queensize bed decent cooker, plenty of storage, adequate size fridge, propex heating and hot water system, shower, cassete toilet etc. downside was no access to cab and a little cramped for those wet days.
As for stability I fitted larger wheels with a greater offset and air suspension to counter the top and rearward weight bias, we took it up into the Pyrenees with no problems, certainly got some funny looks from other motorhomers when the electric jacks were being opperated and then driving out from under the demount another thing no problem leveling up with those jacks could do with some for our Rapido now.
Fuel consumpsion was odd on the D22 loaded or empty it did 22/23 mpg?
Chris
ps I would post some piccys if I could work out how to do it
Forgot to mention tyres were an issue for a while as they just did not seem to be able to handle the weight untill I fitted BFGoodrich all terrain tyres these were inflated to 50psi, all these pick up size tyres seem to be rated at 1050kg but the Goodrich tyre seemed to have a stronger sidewall and did not look overloaded.
