Aerials are fine if you only want the main TV channels in the UK. If you intend to travel abroad and feel the need to keep up with TV at home then you will need a satellite dish and receiver.
For an aerial, there is none better than the Status 530, but we went on a tangent as we did not want a roof mounted aerial. We use a Grade Image 430 with an associated amplifier mounted on a mast that can be attached to a rear ladder or your door mirror using mini bungees. For details look here:
http://www.gradeuk.co.uk/products/antennas/vpimage.asp
The most important thing to get right with an aerial is direction, just as with a satellite dish. Getting the direction is quite simple. The way that we use is to get the correct compass bearing for the place where you will be camping. I always check the postcode for our proposed site against the official postcode checker for digital TV:
www.digitaluk.co.uk.
Do not be tempted to use any other postcode checker as they are not accurate. When you go to the digitaluk site you will find the postcode checker at the bottom right hand corner. Enter the postcode an tickm the box for "In the aerial installation trade". This will give you the compass bearing to your best transmitter and a prediction of the likelihood of a digital signal. It will also give you the same details for analogue transmission if it is still available.
Turn your aerial to the correct direction for the transmitter and tune in.
You must now remember that every time you change transmitter, you must carry out a first time installation/factory reset/default installation on your TV. This will clear all previous channel memory and ensure correct tuning.
As the UK goes through digital switchover, the power at the transmitters will be increased by a power of 10x. This means that you may experience too much signal at times. If this occurs, and it will appear the same as too little signal, turn your amplifier to a low setting. If that does not work, try disconnecting the cable from the aerial to the amplifier and connect this direct to your TV.
Terrestrial TV does work if you understand it and do your homework.

Contrary to Russell's findings, I have found the Status 530 directional aerial to be very good.
but expensive for what it does.
