I would like to obtain HD TV at home without going the Sky route.
It will be some time in 2011 in my area before we can get HD Freeview so I would like to do it via Freesat. (We have one of Snelly's Maxview Freesat boxes in the motorhome so am familiar with what you get/need).
OK, I have a spare Sky dish, LNB and cable. I have a new Sony HD ready TV.
I would like a Freesat box that incorporates programme guide and a recording facility. I may want to network it to other TV's in the house at a later date.
Can anyone recommend a suitable "Box"? Sensibly priced please. (I saw a Humax one for over 400 quid - in which case it would be cheaper to get Sky+)
Have a look at the Managers Specials on the Humax Direct site and the box is only £215. I bought one, and you can't tell the difference between it and a full-price unit. It has full warranty too. Simples!

We bought our Humax FOXSAT-HDR Freesat+ 320GB HD Digital TV Twin Tuner HD Recorder from Amazon about 6 weeks ago (and the price has dropped £6!)
Box itself is superb but the control takes some mastering with the very full and not always easy to understand instruction book.
It might be an option to go to Sky HD for a year. There are currently some very good offer around (Free box, free install etc.) and of course you'll also get C4HD and possibly FiveHD which aren't on Freesat.
After a year cancel and the prices for the Freesat/Freeview boxes may have dropped. You can still keep the box and get BBCHD, ITVHD, C4HD and possibly FiveHD.
Also, what sort of LNB do you have? If it's only a single feed a Freesat PVR will need a new installation (another £100).

Not necesarilly new Derek! Another feed will be needed for the record facility so at a minimum you will need to swap your single feed LNB for a a twin feed and run in another length of satellite cable to the PVR box.
In my view there is only one box to go for on Freesat and that is HUMAX. There have been other boxes recently introduced so perhaps Gerry can confirm this is still the case.

That is only a single tuner box which would be fine if you had a freesat tuner built into the TV otherwise you cannot watch and record at the same time.

I would want to keep it simple really which rules out the option of a single tuner unit coupled to an external hard drive etc.
I think the idea of a years subscription to Sky+ may work out cheaper in the long run, particularly if I cancel after a year and keep the kit.
Could someone please confirm that this is an option - cancel the subscription after a year, keep the kit and the kit retain its full functionality (obviously excluding the pay to view channels)?
I ask because I once considered buying a s/hand Sky+ installation but was then told it wouldn't work without being a subscriber.

I avoided the plug for Humax, but I have had one of their Freeview 9200T units since they were launched - without any problems, and I am VERY pleased with it. That is why I bought the Fressat unit when we moved to an area that won't go Freeview for some time yet.
As Peedee says - there is only one brand that I would recommend for Freesat - Humax.
