I spent some time in Asda and Comet today. The best set seems to me to be the Kenmark from Comet. They have 2 sizes, 15.4" and 19", both are basically 12v with a mains adaptor, have analogue and digital tuners and a built-in DVD player. I looked specifically at the viewing angles of both sets and that aspect seemed adequate to me at better than 45 deg left and right and about 25 deg upwards for the smaller set. I didn't look at the downward direction. The bigger set was the better of the two.
The great advantage I see for a 12v version is that the current consumption at 12v is much lower with direct connection (28W or 2.3a) than through a mains adaptor and inverter both of which introduce inefficiencies.
For Gerry: Comet's Goodmans sets don't have DVDs.
At Asda only the 16" Luxor had a 12v adaptor. The screen had a more limited viewing angle.
I think i'm right in saying the problem with connecting directly to the 12v is when your not on hook up and you start to loose battery power you can damage the tv.
When connected through the inverter this is not the case. Also, if you use the tv on the move when connected directly to the 12v this can also damage the tv due to it getting more than the 12v power it needs.
Someone on here with a better understanding of this than me will come along and explain properly.
From what I understand, the main difference between a purposely made for the leisure market 12 volt tv and a standard 240 volt with optional 12 volt adapter tv, is that a puposely designed 12 volt television is more robust and designed to withstand vibration and bumps whilst your motorhome, caravan or boat is on the move, they are of course much more lightweight too due to needing to be used in vehicles where payload is important and of course they are specifically designed to work and cope with fluctuating voltage levels that are applicable with vehicles that use leisure batteries? A standard domestic style tv, if my understanding is correct, is not designed to cope with such fluctuations and as a result, you may find that once your leisure battery levels start to drop, a standard tv may not operate properly?
If someone never really uses their leisure batteries to power their electrics etc and basically only ever use campsites with EHU's then it's not so much of an issue but if they like to wildcamp or attend rallys which do not provide electricity, then any appliance that can cause a major drain on their batteries, may be something that needs a little more research into?
I am no expert, so I may not be giving spot on advice but I am sure someone will clarify whether I'm on the right track or not?
Thanks for that info, I think that is what I was trying to say. As the tv's in question are of the standard 240 / 12v type, I think its safer to connect these up using an inverter.
After trying several different tv's I now have one of these Philips 15PFL4122/10, which I have permanently connected, whether on or off ehu, to one of these 70W laptop car adaptor (the philips tv is 16V). As a bonus I also run my laptop from it.
The TV is permanently mounted on a VESA arm and shows no signs of suffering damage.
I know its only 4:3 but the picture quality and viewing angles are top notch. We use a cheap 12 volt dvd player permanently connected in to watch videos.
