Hi all
when we go off for a year (not 'till early 2007 unfortunately but we're planning ahead ) we intend to work a few days a month to keep a few pounds rolling in. Is it simple enough to find casual work in most European countries. Does one need any paperwork - visas or work permits. I get the impression from seeing all the foreign staff in hotels etc. in the UK that they come and go all the time between jobs with very little restriction. Is it the same in Europe? What would be a nice, well-paid job to do for short periods? We thought of fruit picking and hotel work so far....

thanks Peejay, we'll have a look at this. I expect there'll be plenty of cash-in-hand work around too, wonder if one has to pay local tax? And declare in this country?

Hi davidlois. I know for a fact that casual work is always available in Spain. It is usually cash in the hand. The easiest is what they call a prop. Otherwise known as a propogandist who hands out leaflets for anything from bars to time-shares.

propogandist eh? We could do that! With luck we'll be able to pick up a few days (hopefully) enjoyable work whenever we feel the need to top up funds. The nature of our year off in Europe is that we won't have much spare cash to squander around. We noted with interest John what you and Sandy had to say about cost of living in your wesite articles, we'll be keeping a continual total of our wordly finances and trying to at least keep the status quo after the year, as well as also having plenty of time to enjoy our year! Say 500 Euros a month might keep us going, which should equate to about 10 hours work a week each on average (unless I can persuade Lois to swing 'er 'andbag!!). Only joking dear, when you read this

1) Airport meet and greet - yielded about £70.00 per day - long hours
2) Cafe bar - £3.50 per hour from memory
3) Deck chaor monitor - yes really - £40.00 per day and in the sun!
