hi all, just thought i'd pass this on. this morning i left vinaros heading south and after 5 km was pulled over by the gaurdia civil and told that it is no longer possible to use an A-frame in spain. the officer was very polite and spoke good english and showed me a 5 or 6 page A4 dossier showing photos of campers with towed cars and loads of blurb. this was a new document dated 31/3/2010 and supposedly sent to all the gaurdia civil saying as from this date a €60 fine will be imposed on anyone towing with a frame. i was not fined but told i would be if i continued to tow my car . i am going to benicarlo trafico office on tuesday when it reopens after easter weekend to try and get a copy of this document. so be warned, it looked official but who knows?? will keep you posted, all the best sean
Thanks Sean we're really interested to hear of your visit to the Police on Tuesday.
We were stopped both in 2008 and 2009 and so didn't take the car this year however we saw plenty who had including a French motorhome towing using an A frame.
I presume you had to separate the car and one had to drive car and one Motorhome.
Good luck
it is no longer possible to use an A-frame in spain
As has been said countless times before on this forum, the European Community reciprocity arrangements on lots and lots and lots of things including A-frames, mean that your (my/our) right to use an A-frame is governed by British legislation, not Spanish.
You're apparently been unlucky in terms of the officer you've encountered.

Dougie.
Hi Dougie...........long time no speak how are you ? Thanks for your post, when we had the A frame fitted Armitages gave us a print out ref what you are saying in several languages, but I totally forgot about that when I read seanoo's post.
Seanoo could you perhaps query that issue on Tues ? I am wondering if I could scan and post the Spanish version from Armitages for you to take with you on Tues,

thanks bozzer, we didnt unhitch , i just waited for them to go and went back to the campsite where i'd just left. i had always known that you could meet a officer who would try and be "funny" about the frame but that has never happened to me. its just the date on this new document that concerns me, and the fact that it wouldnt matter how many pieces of paper you waved under their noses advocating the use of A-frames in the EU they seem to think that spain can pick and choose which bits of law they want. i wouldnt like to guess how many A-framers there are in spain at the moment but if the gaurdia has been told to pick them up thats going to be a major problem for people trying to get home. the paperwork you have briarose would be useful if you can email it to me to print off, thankyou. regards sean
My brother in law has just returned this week from 5 months in Spain towing a car behind his motorhome. Had no trouble at all with the Spanish police and he was wildcamping most of the time.
hi lookback, i also have been out here for nearly six months without any problems at all. however this new supposed law only came into force 31/03/2010 ie three day ago. regards sean
