I know nothing about photography so I maybe talking nonsense.

Looking at you photo, you have a silhouette against the sun, could you not put another clear filter on the lens, and put a small mark with a felt pen to hide the flair?

Cropped down slightly to lose some of the dead sky then a bit of levels to lose the darkest shadows then some - brightness and + contrast to even it up and a bit of saturation to put the sparkle back.

That is over Lake Taupo in January - it was a birthday present to me from the great photographer in the sky.
