Just paid £260 for key to be shipped from Italy and recoded. Very straightforward but left a hole in the pocket... Subsequently found my lost key and am trying to find out if it can be recoded with the new code.

PS Just got the answer about recoding - no! Fiat will have cancelled the original code and the key is now obsolete.

My 2007 Adria came with a key code card, my fathers 2011 Autotrail came with a A4 sheet of paper which essentially gave the same information. Is that not the case for all X250's unless this has been lost at some point?

I am pretty sure that every new vehicle comes with AT LEAST two keys, so if you are ever looking to buy a vehicle that only has ONE key I would use that as a bargaining point (after first finding out the replacement costs)

I seem to recall some years ago that Fiat cars came with THREE keys, two of one colour and the third (or "master") of a different colour. The idea being that the "master" key allways stayed at home or similar safe? place Very Happy

My new last year Fiat Ducato came with two keys but only one has the remote locking. More worrying is that the secondary security system fitted by the dealer has only one remote so if that is lost I am at the mercy of Chelston - could be even costlier than Fiat!

I have a 1999 Ducato and it only came with one key set, Timpsons in my local town cut all the keys including reprogramming the ignition key successfully, i have since received the red key but do I need it?

You will do if your ECU code box develops amnesia/Alzheimers and needs to be reprogrammed - the code box supposedly cannot be reprogrammed from anything other than the Red key.

Some locksmiths (and others) claim to be able to do it/by-pass the system but I've never seen it done.

On the matter of key costs I've just had a new key cut for a 2005 Transit. A simple cloned (code just copied from the existing key, so no need for re-coding), generic chip "Silca" key cost £70. So I don't think a brand new properly coded OEM key for around twice that is so outrageous.

Having read this thread it has made me think!!!.
When we bought our 2004 Ducato in 2010 it came fitted with Cobra Alarm, Heo locks and keys on the cab doors, and "Tracker" plus an American steering wheel "crook lock" that I had from previous Mh. So its pretty secure????
Plus 1 ignition key, 1 cobra fob, i cylinder lock key for the Fiamma Hab door lock. .
We have become neurotic in case we manage to misplace any one of the keys so approached our local Fiat dealer (Platts of Stafford). Basic entry key for the Ducato nearly £200 and a remote flip key considerably more.
Timpsons despite advertising key coding ability do not have local ability for Fiat and need to "buy in" the blank ID48 chipped key ( available on ebay for £12). Total cost £283.12 which includes VAT.
We may remain neurotic and very, very careful.

well I guess I must be very lucky then, Laughing I ordered an extra key when buying motorhome, it was fitted with a Cobra alarm which uses the same key fob as the Fiat keys. so I have 2 sets of keys and no extra items to worry about loosing. Why has no other dealer done this, so I have to say well done to Southdowns, again.
