Hello again,
In my opinion they are half trailer half chassis extension, when you look at the rear overhang on some motorhomes which must be marginaly legal anyway then you add another 3 ft what would be the outswing on a ninety dgree corner? you would definatley need good mirrors to see avoid swiping somthing or someone.
norm
It can't be both. The majority of the weight of the 'trailer' and load is on it's wheels with the only other contact the nose weight on the tow bar. It is a trailer of that there is no doubt.
It doesnt matter what you "think" something is, its the legal definition that actually defines what it is.
If ANY weight is borne by the road surface its a trailer, no ifs ands or buts.
Before anyone starts on about articulated vehicles the goods carrying parts are still trailers.
If a certain percentage of the weight of the trailer is superimposed on (rather than just being attached like a caravan to ) the towing vehicle it is defined as an articulated vehicle (cant recall what the actual percentage is, but its fairly high)
A car and caravan are not (for the above reasons) articulated vehicles, they are a motor vehicle and a trailer. These hydralift things are, by definition, very clearly, trailers.
I have looked into this long and hard, from Sept 12 all trailers need to comply with European Type Approval and under this standard (2007/46/E ) it is certainly a "01" trailer and I cannot see how it could ever comply. Without compliance they will be illegal all over Europe.
I'll just post this as it was reply to my email to DOT when I was considering purchasing;
Dear Markt500
Thank you for your email of the 3 October concerning the Hydra Trail produced by the company called Easy Lifter.
We agree with you looking at the website link you attached, the trailer does not have a suspension of spring/rubber between the wheels and chassis which does not meet the Construction and Use Regulations.
However, the Department cannot give an authoritative interpretation of the law; that is a matter for the courts. Enforcement of road traffic law is an operational matter for individual Chief Police Officers and their officers can issue verbal warnings, fixed penalty notices or report the motorist for formal prosecution.
We suggest that you contact your Trading Standards office who can look into this matter further.
Yours sincerely

Is this now, at least, one of the longest threads ?
And still Inconclusive.
I will stick to my trailer. I know it's a trailer, it has suspension, two wheels and a tow hitch. But hang on ! it folds in half for storage.
Just hope there are no irregularities in this.
