I have a Status omni direction aerial on my van, "factory fitted". It's OK if you are very near to the transmitter, but not much use if you are more than a mile of 2 away. Apparently the Status directional one are better, but they needn a complex mounting arrangement, including a big hole in the roof of your van, for the mast to pass through. They are also very expensive.

So I use an Image caravan aerial. It's not a permanent mount, but can still be erected in a matter of minutes. It is a LOT better than the Status one. The one I have came complete with a mast, coax and and external socket which is easy to fit, and eliminates the need to pass the coax though a window or whatever.

Have look at the following link for a guide to pricing etc.

I use one of these:

Excellent aerial and cheap. I would recmmend that you also use the optional booster. Can be mounted externally so no drilling of the body.
Most important thing with aerials is to get the direction spot on. This is easy if you follow a few simple rules.

If your going 'fixed', dont mess about with anything cheap... its got to be the status 530 im afraid - its the only one that gives you a half decent chance of getting a signal, due to its directional nature and boosting. £125 I think they are, off top of my head. They are suitable for DIY installation, but as someone mentioned, they need a big hole in the roof to be drilled.

For freestanding, the status image 630 kit is under £70 and works very well. Its an aerial on a pole, external connection point, 12v booster - all in one kit.

As Wilse said, consider satellite. Although im not sure the suitcase kits are ideal, they do work and are cheap. Aldi etc sometimes has them on offer for under £100 including receiver. A step up from that is the maxview b2554 54cm dish and tripod kit (£149) and the excellent new maxview mxl020/lnb receiver with easy find lnb which makes finding a signal a lot easier (£120) - so total decent kit for under £270.

We have just bought a tv for the first time in a touring van. I am guessing that an indoor aerial is not good.

Now that Gerry (who is my guru, saviour and up on a pedestal so high its unbelievable) has recommended that aerial above, I could well be going that way. Oh well -just another thing to buy for our....wait for it...... Eriba Puck caravan.

Hampshireman,
Congratulations on the Eriba Puck, brilliant vans, totally bombproof. My brothers father in law had one for many years, took it all round Europe. Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks Gerry, it was the make we wanted although played about which model and only had it 6 weeks and just two w/ends away in it. Going on Friday through ten days in Devon and Cornwall with main base at Sennen Cove. Southern Spain for all of September planned, with other trips UK wise in between now and then.

What are >> these << like Gerry?

Only as a standby in case of trees blocking the Sat dish, or just occasionally for recording from DVB-T onto a USB stick.

TIA
